Help choosing IWB holster for G19

Hi everyone,

I just paid for my new Glock 19. I have to pick it up in a week. Next, I need a holster.

By no means do I intend for you guys to tell me what's good or bad; I just more information so that I have more information to work with in buying a holster.

I don't know much of anything at all holsters, whether it be the materials involved in the holster's construction, the companies to buy from, and so on.

So, my first question is this: What companies and holster models tend to be popular for IWB carry?

My next question is much more open-ended: What advantages and disadvantages do different materials offer? From what I've seen, holsters are made from ballistic nylon, kydex, and leather.

From the holsters that I have played with in the past, I wasn't too thrilled with models that held the pistol in place through force. I tried a PPK/S in a nylon IWB holster which was held in place by sticking said pistol down as far as it would go. I preferred a kydex holster I tried that "clicked" into place.

So far, I've been told to look at:
- Comptac
- Sidearmor
- Galco (only name I recognize)

So yeah, help the newbie.

I don't care personally for any nylon IWB holster. This is not to say that a good one cannot be made, but I know of none that are made for the specific firearm. (Bianchi Accu-Molds are, but are not IWB.) One wag here called them "cloth-and-sponge pouches."

The Kydex holsters have a lot going for them. To get the same stiffness and rigidity as these (you will find this desirable when you want to reholster), a leather holster has to be made thicker and/or with a reinforced mouth opening, which adds bulk. It is also impossible to sweat through them. A down side (for me) is that this rigidity works against them - they are nearly as hard as the gun and offer little isolation or shielding from the gun against your body, therefore are not quite as comfortable.

For the slightly greater comfort afforded, I prefer a good leather holster by a slim margin. My current favorite - despite its design adding bulk or thickness - for my own G19 is the Galco Royal Guard.

I carry either a Glock 23 or 27 and have Don Hume JIT slides and IWB (715 mosel) for both. The IWB set-up for cross draw is easy to conceal, accessible and comfortable. Most people go thru many holsters before finding the one right for them.
