My grandpa gave me his old Winchester today. Its old, 20+ years old in fact. It is a Winchester Defender 12guage that is all it says on the barrel. This gun is in desparate need of a cleaning, but i cant figure out how to get the slide out to get to the bolt. Any help?

mine is a winchester 1300 defender and after you take the barrel off the slide should just pull out of the front of the gun along with the bolt and everything, but I don't know if the older ones are any different mine is fairly recent manufacture

that is how my cousins comes apart also, just like my Daly. take the cap off the end of the mag tube, slide the barrel out and pull the forearm and inards out.

not sure when his was built though

it didnt work. its probably older than i thought. i have never seen a slide that looked like this before. i have a mossberg 20guage thats probably 35 years old and its stil the same slide i have on my 835 which is 2 years old if that.

no i dont because i dont have a digital camera, plus my cell phone wont e-mil pictures. How ever i do belive its a winchester 1200 defender. i asked my grandpa this morrning and he says he cant remember, but that seems right to him.

Heck, the oldest 1200 is still 20 years younger then I am!Regardless, they weren't made long enough for either of them to be considered an "old" gun yet.

Apparently "old" is in the eye of the beholder old man! :neener:

lol 41mag.

it doesnt just slide off after i take the screw and barrel off. i was reading that they had alot of problems with the 1200. They said it wasnt doing so hot for the police back then, and thats why they replaced it with the 1300. they said alot of parts bent or broke. do you think that that coulb be a possibility to why it doesnt slide off. I recently shot the gun and it shot fine.

My grandpa got the gun when he was on the police force, i did figure that out, but other than that i dont know.

Look at pages 21 through 25 of the Owner's Manual which RCModel posted a link to. They explain and show some pictures of how to disassemble and reassemble the gun.

BTW, a gun manufactured 20 years ago is a "young" gun, not an "old" gun. ;)

its about 37 years old actually i read that they came out in the early 70's, but i know thats not really an "old" gun, but 2 me thats old.

also guys i wont be able to check this thread for a few days, im going hunting tomorro morrning and wont be back till sunday night or monday morrning.

Hey BuckshotBilly,
It is a little different than than the 1300.
You need to remove the ejector first by pressing in on it & popping
it off back pin. Then pull it out front along with ejector spring.

Next take out the screw on slide arm bridge (the plate on bottom of bolt assy) & everything
will then slide out the front of receiver.
Sounds harder than it really is.

Also be sure to keep a hand on the plate/bolt assy while sliding out or you will launch your firing pin & spring across room!
Good luck!
