Obsolete? What about the 1911? That's 9 times as old as the ruger and you call the ruger obsolete?
Obsolete deosn't mean old, it means not as useful as more modern designs. The P95 is agood pistol. It just has terrible performance when you line it up against more modern designs like the SR9, XD, M&P, Glock etc. The DA/SA action is dieing off as well.
The 1911, while older, still has features that no other pistol can match. Thinnest fullsize .45, best trigger, safe action, low recoil.
My P95 was a great pistol when I was a newb, but I out grew it quickly and moved on to Glocks and 1911's.
Things I liked aboutmy P95:
+reliable
+durable
+low recoil
+accurate
+dirt cheap, they're only worth about $250 right now.
+very safe
Things I hated:
-slow to draw due to very stiff DA trigger pull. An SR9 can be drawn, and emptied into a target twice as fast as the P95.
-takes a ton of skill and patience to aim and shoot that DA trigger pull
-lots of floppiness to the trigger in SA mode.
-Huge. It's an open carry pistol, not a CCW.
It's a good beginners gun, I train newbs with it. It's low recoil and accuracy in SA mode give them quick confidence. I no longer explain DA/SA though. That's just a waste of time and confuses them. I just demonstrate DA/SA action and let them dry fire each mode themselfs. I try get them shooting a striker fired pistol or 1911as soon as possible so that they can see how much faster those types of pistols can clear an IDPA type stage.
I have concerns about training newbs with striker fired pistols. Reholstering takes extra caution and practice. If I had a fullsize 9mm 1911 I'd use that for starting out instead of the P95.
