I went shooting and experienced 5 Failure to Extracts with my new Beretta 92FS. (I had a friend that I thought was limp-wrist experience 3 of the 5, but then it happened to me two more times.)

I was devastated. I took apart the weapon and nothing was broken, but I noticed that the 'Firing Pin Block Lever' moves freely. Is this normal or am I missing a spring? See here for reference: http://beretta92fs.com/video.php?id=214

There is no resistance whatsoever when I move it. It wiggles quite freely.

Perhaps it was the ammo I was using. Remington UMC 115gr. JHP's from Wal-Mart. I'm confused.

Any advice is appreciated.

I would take it to a gunsmith. The safety should not wiggle but stay in either the up or down position until you move it.

It's been some time since I've handled a 92/M9, but I think the hammer block lever on it works similar to my SIG. It's not spring loaded. The hammer bar should move it up when you pull the trigger. This in turn pushes up the spring loaded trigger catch in the slide. When the trigger bar releases the block lever, the spring loaded catch in the slide pushes the lever back down.

In regards to the failure to extract: check that the area behind the extractor is clean, that the spring is installed properly and not damaged and that the extractor is installed correctly and not damaged. Also inspect the chamber for any damage or dirt.

Regards,
Greg

Yes, it should move freely, but there should also be some spring tension as there is a spring.

This is normal, the lever is free floating with no spring. gb6491 is correct, the trigger bar engages the lever just before releasing the hammer. The firing pin block itself contains the spring which resets it.

Extraction failures are incredibly rare on this series. Did the extractor jump the rim or did the entire slide fail to recoil? Did the fired rounds sound normal?
