A friend of mine has a S&W revolver and has asked me about how old it is . He gave me the following info:
on barrel - .38 S&W SPECIAL CTG
PATENTED FEB. 6,08
SEPT. 14, 08
DEC. 28, 14

SERIAl NO# 41148

On bottom of grip frame - either 621144 or 821148 these numbers are hard for him to read.

Any help you could give us is greatly appreciated.

The number on the butt is the serial number. 621XXX would fall somewhere around 1930-31 (my best guess); 821XXX would be into WWII range (1941-42) something usually called a pre-Victory model and would likely have been made with a butt swivel.

41,148 in 38 Special translates to 1903-05 which conflicts with your patent date of '14. I assume this number is on the frame and crane not the serial number in that era.

Letter prefix?

Is there a letter (V, S, C) preceeding the number on the butt? It may be far to the left of the number.
