help for too-tight m1 carbine sling/oiler slot?

Hi,
I bought 2 web slings/oilers from Numrich for my boys for Christmas... the slings are so tight in the oiler slot I can't get the oiler in. I managed to get one in an my inland by slipping one end of the oiler in the slot and whacking the other end with a wooden dowel and hammer, but in the NPM it's so tight I can't see any way of getting it in there short of rasping the oiler slot, which I don't want to do... even though that stock is already pretty crappy.

I'm guessing the webbing is thicker than GI spec or something. Any ideas?

Both carbines are CMP guns with FAT stocks.

It doesn't do you much good if you have to use violent force to get it in and out. You COULD get a round file and ease up that cavity a little, or you could find another oiler from a different source and see if it fits better. I would also poke around gun shows for an extra stock, which might not be bad to have anyway. One to save and keep pretty, one to modify and beat up.

Dont remove any wood!. You have to put the oiler in the slot, thread 1 side around the oiler, press oiler to 1 side in the slot, push sling thru. This process is hard to describe, but it works.

Just in case you're not aware of how to install the Carbine sling, here's how.

Snap the end with the "Lift the Dot" fastener to the front sling swivel.

Run the end of the sling through the slot from the LEFT side of the slot so its sticking out the RIGHT side.

Drop the oil into the slot with the sling in the rear of the slot.

Run the sling back through the slot in front of the oiler.
The stock slot at the front has just enough clearance to allow the metal tabbed end of the sling to pass in front of the oiler.

If you have to remove wood, you do it at the front of the slot where the long sling bevel is. Remove just enough that the metal tab will pass in front of the oiler as above.

Not in this case. I can barely get one side of the sling through with the oiler in place. Guess I'll have to remove some wood as dfariswheel describes.

I just went through this recently. Do not bother to cut or grind your stock. Take the end that has to go around the oiler and wrap it in leather on both sides. Take a heavy hammer and flatten it until it goes. It won't hurt anything and if it's a repro it won't matter. It is also mentioned in a carbine book (which I can't find right now). I did this a few months ago with my CMP Inland so give this a try.

Good idea... I was considering mashing the sling in a hydraulic press or something. I like your idea better.

You have an original gun you're thinking of carving up to put a repro sling in?

I have an original gun and original sling, and as previously stated, the only way to get it on is to thread it in and around the oil tube.
