A good new O/U will likely be $1500 on up. Best for him to select the one that fits him the best. I'd hate for you to spend the money and then it doesn't fit him. You could create a home made gift card telling him what he is going to get after Christmas. Or shop with him before Christmas. It won't be a surprise. But, won't be a possible mistake either.

Browning or Beretta would be good choices.

Oh, come on

You guys actually believe that an Earth woman is going to buy her husband a shotgun for Christmas? This is some sort of gullibility experiment for someone's Marketing or Psych thesis.

+1 on the "he'll have to pick it", of course. Out of Santa's warehouse, no doubt.

Uh...my wife bought me a SAA Colt .44-40, an 1885 Browning Creedmore .45-90, and an Uberti 44-40

Correct answer is...buy a box of Winchester AA 7 1/2 trap loads (shells). Cut out a picture of an over/under and put it in the box. Wrap it up.

He'll be confused until you tell him to open the box. Tell him the shells are for the new gun.

Give it to him on Christmas morning, then make sure to go to the shop with him when he picks it out. Don't act bored, and be supportive.

He will love it. Trust me. Do NOT try to pick it out yourself. I wouldn't try to pick one for my best friend, and I've been shooting for over 50 years.

I have an O/U that cost over $2,000, but it may not be the one he'd like.

WOW you guys are awesome!! Sorry I had to ignore the rest of the world for a few days to get through my last undergrad finals... when I logged back on, I expected to see maybe a few comments, but instead there's over 20! I dont know if I can respond to all of them, but I'll try a few...

I liked gdvan01's analogy of high-end O/Us to really nice suits that need to be tailored and low-end O/Us to sweaters with generic sizes. That was great. Also, sm's idea of making a trick package made me laugh, but that might be too mean. He hates being tricked. Oh, and no.. I dont have any sisters.

I haven't decided anything yet. I'm going to go shopping with his best friend tonight and see what we turn up. I may print out all these comments and take them with me!
I do see how its important for a gun to fit someone and even if I dont understand that fully, I'll trust your opinions.

I'm still torn up about it though...
I like Redneck2's idea about making something out of the shells and pictures of O/U's. But its possible I know him well enough to get one for him (he may actually appreciate not having to go shopping and make decisions... plus he's big on instant gratification). Of course, I can never ASSUME I know him well enough.
So, OK, say I did buy him a gun, and it ends up being a mistake, does anyone know if re-selling it is a option, and if it is, how much value depreciates? I at least know now that you cant "return" guns.. thanks to the sales clerk at Bass Pro. Hehe, I felt kinda stupid asking that. (This was a while ago, ok). Anyway, I'm writing too much. Wish me luck shopping!

Welcome aboard.

I hope that after you make the purchase you stick around and enjoy more here at The High Road.

Everything posted above has merit one way or the other. I won't add anything - other than this - you are a wonderful wife to even consider buying your husband a shotgun.

I've been dropping hints to my wife for 11 months about a Benelli Super Black Eagle II. I'll probably get a tie, some boxer shorts, and a glow in the dark Duncan yo-yo.

Your husband will love whatever you decide upon.

Merry Christmas!
