I've aquired a most unusual Mauser, and I've been unable to find any information on it. any help would be appreciated.

the details...

top front of the reciever says -
waffenfabrik
mauser A-G
oberndorf A/N
1916

it has a 4 digit serial number in the 6000 range on the left side of the reciever

standard mauser bolt with turned down handle

ribbed barrel

dual trigger system, with the second 'trigger' reducing the pull for primary trigger, there is also what appears to be an adjustment screw between the two triggers, and it has a wooden trigger gaurd!?

I've never seen or heard of a mauser in this configuration. If anyone can help me identify it, and acertain it's aproximate value I would greatly appreciate it. I'll get a pic of up as soon as I can.

Maybe a commercial variant from the inter-war period?

I mean, their military arms production was limited between wars, right? This might fit the bill of something produced around that time period.

The rifle sounds like a standard Model 98 Sporting rifle.
Mauser made them in huge quantities and so did a myraid of gunsmiths all over the world using basic Mausers actions as the platform.

Wooden and horn triggerguards were quite popular with German and Austrian 'Jagers', (hunters) as were double set triggers so I would bet the rifle came from that area, probably brought back from the region by a WW2 vet as war booty.

Do you know the caliber of the rifle?

I think it is a military Mauser action sporterized in Europe.
Slug the bore, if done shortly after WW I it is probably a J-bore because 8x57 S-bore rifles were not allowed under terms of the Treaty of Versailles. Done later, it could well be an S-bore because Herr Hitler's boys did not pay much attention to treaties.

Double set triggers, ribbed barrel, and horn trigger guard indicate it is a fairly nice sporter. Lack of a maker's name indicates it is not a really nice sporter.

I will get a pic of it up for you all to see once I find the battery charger for my camera, and get my battery charged.

cosmetic condition of the rifle is fair. a little surface rust on the exterior of the barrel, a few dings in the stock(which is monte carloish in style) functionaly it is in very good condition, bore is good, locking lugs are perfect. I still need to do a headspace check on it. bolt works smooth, and the trigger is very crisp and light.

I found a marking on the left side of the reciever, it says "Gem.98." I assumed this to mean it's a german model 98 mauser action, but I could very well be wrong.

anyway, pictures will be forthcoming.
