I was sorting through some mixed range brass that I bought recently and came across this one. There are two shots of the same photograph; one cropped and the other color-corrected by the software:

Blank Headstamp cropped.jpg Blank Headstamp corrected.jpg

The case is brass. It is boxer primed. At this point it has been washed in a weak acid solution, decapped, resized and tumbled in walnut media to make it more photogenic, but there was no other marking on the head than what you see here. Other than "9MM LUGER" the headstamp is truly blank. It hasn't been scratched off or obliterated by being smashed into the bolt.

Any ideas about where this one might have come from?

I have never had any factory ammo with that headstamp. But I have found about twenty or so from a box of Ultramax bulk reloads that I shot up someone gave me after they sold their 9MM pistol to buy a 40 and forgot they had a box put away. They reloaded fine and are still in my loading rotation unless they were lost at the range.

At least they are not AMERC.

Thanks for letting me know that similar anonymous cases have worked for you.

The case itself is nice and clean and in good condition. I see no reason why it wouldn't be fine. I had just never seen a case like it before and thought someone else might know something about it.

A weak acid solution isn't good for brass. Likely why the copper is leaching.
Can't make out the head stamp, but '9mm Luger' is commercial vs milsurp. Probably American. It'd say '9mm Para' if it was European.

First of all, everyone wet tumbling using either vinegar (as recommended by Hornady) or Lemishine, is using a weak acid solution to shine their brass. I'll leave you to deal with the legions that wet tumble their brass with Lemishine and your unsubstantiated assertion that it is not good for brass.

Second, there's no evidence of "copper leaching" unless you have evidence that I am not aware of.

Citric acid, which is what Lemishine is, won't hurt brass and doesn't cause copper leaching. In fact, you can make Lemonaide from pure citric acid. The recipe was on the container for the 10 pounds of food grade citric acid I purchased for cleaning up swaged bullets after annealing. It's also used to remove dark tarnish from brass cases, and no damage results from it's use.

Hope this helps.
