I inherited these two Mausers (and some other guns) from my grandfather that was a WWII Army vet. The one is a standard Wehrmacht Mauser, code byf 44. The one that has me stumped is this one with a nonstandard stock. It has no factory code on the receiver and very little markings at all. I'm guessing it is pre war or early war because it has a milled floor plate.

Also if you had to give a percentage for appraisal what condition would you say this rifle is like 60-50%?.

Likely a WW I rifle that has been rewoked between the wars or shoirtly after WW II into a hunting rifle by a German or Austrian gunsmith. There are many of these floating around. They were popular souvenirs for GIs in Europe after the war.

I believe that is a muzzle cover meant to keep moisture and debris out of the barrel. typical German over-engineering?

M-98 action of un-known vintage that has been reworked into a nice sporter rifle. Very common. That muzzle / front sight protector is worth more than a few bucks itself.
Did you also get the upper scope rings?????? Those are very hard to find for the old German style quick release mounts. They are worth big bucks.

The muzzle protector was also used during cleaning when several cleaning rods were screwed together and the hole in the muzzle end was a "Guide that kept the rods center'd and off the rifleing at the crown.
The muzzle protectors were used up to the start of WWII, but after '41, it was usually the rod/brush in the chamber, a pull through of Flax or Hemp to clean the bore , from the chamber end out.

Ya never know, grand pa could have gotten it from a Jagermeister who kept Georing's forrests or a Volkssturm Sniper rifle, thrown on a pile of Panzerfausts by a 12 year old boy going into the POW pen, or just a welll used hunting rifle made from surplus parts.

They are worth big $$ if you can give them provenience. Have the "Internet experts" a look, and do fecal loads of research your self, and then appraise it if theres no nagging in the back of yer head. Fakes abound, but so does the real stuff..

I, for one, like it very much. Got scope?
