Help in making rifle fit....

Ok, so I have this wonderfully accurate rifle that I can shoot well but it is uncomfortable as all get out and I can only imagine that while my accuracy is great, it could be improved I am sure. The rifle in question is a new Sako TRG 42, which is set up a little different than my TRG22. Anyways I am running a Spuhr mount on it which seems to place the scope rather high for the factory cheek weld. So, I ordered a custom made spacer to fit this rifle and raise the comb on it. The spacer is a little over half an inch high. it makes the rifle look goofy as it can be but in order to have a good cheek weld and proper line of sight through the scope I have to have it this high. The only thing is, when shooting prone from this position it contorts my neck in weird ways and after a few rounds I got such a crick in my neck that I am ready to call it quits.

I am at a loss here. If I take the spacer off and use the factory piece then I am looking at the back of the scope mount, not through the scope. I mean I can hold my head up off of the scope and view the reticle and let one go but that is neither comfy or good for accuracy. So, what would be the best way to determine what height I should get this spacer? The good news is that it is made out of teflon or something and I can easily grind it down to fit if need be. Maybe I should stack a deck of cards in there little by little until I get something comfortable. Does that sound like a good idea? I mean how do you guys do it? We all know that a rifle that fits is best. Now if I had only got this with the adjustable stock instead I wouldnt be having this problem lol, but its expensive enough as is. The other TRG does not have this problem because the scope mount is much lower and more in the line of sight. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, silly question. Is the scope mounted that high for a reason, and would lower rings work?

The scope is only that high because the spuhr mount puts it that high. The reason I got this mount is because I am told its the best and has a 20moa can't built in. This was intended to be a extreme long range set up. Other than that there is no reason for it to be mounted high. My other is mounted I would say probably .25" lower or maybe even lower than that. In any case I would like to try and make it work because it is an expensive set up. I am still thinking I need to get a deck of cards and just add or remove until I find a good height and make the spacer whatever size that winds up being.

Try lower rings and mounts. Also try a stick-on comb piece, like those used by trap shooters. You can put it on for one position, take it off for a different position.

Guess it wasn't!

High mounts are never the best.
Unless you are forced to use one to clear a very large scope objective lens bell.

spuhr mounts are nice, but not at all necessary. and they come in several different heights.
