I'm in the market for another hunting rifle, and feel the Howa design will fill this itch nicely.

I use a short-stocked rifle for deer hunting because six layers of clothing messes up the LOP and scope eye relief on a "summer rifle." Plus the shorter stocks often shift the balance to the rear, which also fits my style of hunting better (YMMV).

Can anyone point to first-hand knowledge of what differentiates the Howa youth model stock (includes stock spacers) compared to the Howa carbine (also includes spacers in some models, e.g. Similar model in the Weatherby X)?

If the stocks are identical except for the camo patterns, I'm going for the youth model.

Disclaimer: Despite helpful intentions, I am not interested in other scope/mount suggestions. Thanks in advance!

I have the Weatherby Vanguard S2 youth model chambered in 308. The stock is, I believe, the same fiber reinforced composite material used on the WBY-X line. I can't confirm this 100% as I don't own a WBY-X rifle, but everything I've seen leads me to believe it's the same material. It's a nice stock; it is stiff and is not slippery in wet weather.

I went for the youth model because it was cheaper, and like you I prefer a shorter LOP. Mine shoots under an inch at 100 yards with Federal match ammo, and does pretty well with premium hunting ammo as well.

Much appreciated. I think the barrel contours on both rifles are identical, but it was the stock design/composition that most interests me.
