I really want an AR-15. But not in .223. I want a caliber that I already shoot, so 9mm is it. I also would like to build it myself. I know you need a block to drop in the magwell of a standard milspec lower. I plan to get a stripped lower and a complete upper. The specs I have are a) must be able to use unmodified magazines, meaning UZI or STEN mags. b) 16" barrel, preferably a heavier profile. c) collapsible stock. d) overall cost for rifle (not counting mags) of less than $600. any help appreciated, thankyou.

I'm not sure there are any conversions that'll meet your specs. AFAIK, the Colt type 9mm (also made by RRA) uses modified Uzi mags, or mags made for the Colt type. Oly Arms uses modified Sten mags, although I understand you can get blocks to allow use of mags without that fugly block welded on.

Using a collapsable stock also requires use of a 9mm buffer. With a fixed stock and standard buffer you're OK.

Your budget's also going to be tough, since new 9mm uppers start at $400 or so up to maybe $500.

Check out AR15.com. There's a good long thread in there on 9mm ARs. I'd give you the link, but ar15.com is blocked at work.

My 9mm AR meets your specs.

I bought a complete Oly Arms upper (16" heavy barrel, fixed A2 carry handle) used from a guy for $375. I got a DPMS lower for $99, lower parts kit for $50 and 6 position RRA collapsible stock for $55. I bought a magwell block for $65 so I can use cheap unmodified Sten mags (new condition $7.99 from CDNN).

I used the standard collapsible stock buffer and have had no cycling problems.

Total package was a little over your $600 limit but darn close.
