Well the only riflery I've ever done to any extent was pest control with my RWS air rifle (.177 pellet @ 1000fps). I had a nice airgun specific scope and killed many many many critters with that rifle. It was heavy to tote in the woods but it really killed all the little critters I came across. I learned all about trigger control, shooting positions, shooting at living creatures, all that good stuff thanks to that rifle. I've owned a .22LR, .22 magnum, Ruger Mini-14, and a SAR-1. I'm ready for a real rifle.
I want something bolt action, scoped, and accurate/powerful enough to take medium sized game. I also intend to play around at the 1000yd rifle range (not at 1000 yards though, I realize such shooting is extremely difficult) in Oak Ridge (north of Knoxville) as I work right down the road now and some friends of mine shoot there. I also don't want the rifle to be too heavy.
Right now I'm looking at the Remington 700P LTW, the evil black bolt action with 20" barrel, lighter stock, in .308 http://www.remingtonle.com/rifles/700pltrtws.htm
I understand that this is far from a woods gun to be lugging around all day, but that is what I have my shotguns for. This will mostly be a range toy, but I'll take it hunting if I ever get the itch. I like to get real familiar with one gun, so I want top quality. Oh and next year I'm going to jump through all the hoops and get a supressor, I've always wanted a supressed .308 bolt gun hence the 20" barrel.
Think this is a good choice?
How much are rifles like this going for? I see it on gunsamerica.com for about $750 for just the rifle.
Would I save any money getting the pre-assembled rifle from Remington, or buying the parts (rifle, scope, rings, bipod, sling, case....) seperately and having a friend help me put them together?
