Help me choose a rifle

I have a Saiga in x39 which I converted to AK format. I looked hard for a 308 model in my price range but had to settle for x39. Like many folks I really did not like the sporterized hunting config with ordinary stock and no pistol grip. It seemed way out of balance. I'm not sure which config you are looking at or limited to. I wouldnt get the "hunting" version because it almost defeats the description for me. Of course, in the U.S. we were forced to buy our Saigas that way because of the 922r import rules unless already converted with American parts. Maybe you are not bound by that so much there? Other than that I think the 308 Saiga is an excellent choice...and for you, getting parts and support from Izhmash would be probably be easier than for us.

But anyway, even though I get the impression you want a semi-auto, your post made me remember that I've kind wanted a Savage 11 "hog hunter" in 308 for awhile, for exactly the purposes you mentioned! 4644.jpg

Hello,
The M76s are more affordable over here and the round carries a little more punch than the .308. Maybe I could get the M76 and shorten the barrel (by a professional) to 18 inches and I will have a rifle only 6 cm longer than saiga with a little heftier round?

US made firearms are avilable over here but they are hella expensive. I get get both M76 or Saiga + SKS, or M76 or Saiga + pistol or a shotgun for the price of a basic .223 AR 15.

I have no doubt that 30 rds of .223 will stop just about anything but I feel like I need a more powerful round. Hence mauser or the .308. Dont want to find myself unloading a full mag only to have a bear get on top of me before he collapses.

Palmetto State and DiamondBack both sell AR10s for under $1000.00

I am not even sure where to start about importing a firearm from USA, even though I have all the necessary legalwork done.

Over here when you are buying a firearms it is as if you are buying an ICBM.

With your parameters and stated purpose, the .308 is what I would choose.

I own anSKS. I like it. That’s not what you’re asking for here.

YMMV

I like the idea of a shortened M76. I shouldn't think this will give you any issues with the gas system, but that would be a question for your gunsmith. Add correct optics for closer range work, and you should have a good rifle for your purpose. There's not much a 196 gr 7,92mm bullet won't stop, and the shorter barrel won't give you much of a velocity handicap. I was very impressed with the rifle when I fielded it in Bosnia and Croatia many years ago under less than ideal circumstances. Accuracy with military ball and commercial match ammunition was outstanding. Our guys preferred it to the STG 58 and G3 rifles they had available for counter sniper operations.

Wish I had purchased one here in the 'states when they were imported some years ago at an affordable price. Ammunition availability was the sticking point, as most of the military ammunition imported was corrosive primed and the rifles are very hard on brass making reloading a difficult proposition.

Another rifle I just thought of that should be available in your part of the world is an Austro-Hungarian M95 Mannlicher. Not sure the availability of the 8x56R round in suitable sporting loadings. Another option would be a Swiss K-11 or K-31 if those are there. If you can skip the bayonet, a sporting Blaser or Steyr straight pull would be a fine option. Hard to beat those for fast shooting in close.

Well you might be better served by a lever action rifle in a magnum handgun caliber like a .44 Mag plus when you are able to purchase your handgun you'll have a nice selection of revolvers that chamber said cartridge. and the supply of ammunition would be simplified.

I just wanted to say that i went with the 8 x 57 M76 in the end. For 600 usd it was a great price, and it came with 2.5-10 X 50 scope with variable illumination red dot and 2 mags, also got some soft points with it.

The buttstock is handmade, still has a pistol grip that i prefer but the buttstock is a little shorter than original which makes it a tad shorter than the original. It is about 42 - 43 inches in length and has a 22 inch barrel so it will definitely pack more punch than the .308 out of the 16 inch barrel.

Overall i really like it, it sems to be built like a tank. It weighs just under 10lbs (4.5kg).

And really its not that awkward to manouver with. I wouldnt want to run a mile with it of course, but still, its not as bulky as I thought it would be.
