I'm going to come into a little money next month ($500-$600). I've decided I need a new handgun. I've narrowed the choices down to the following (I think):
Ruger SP101 in .357 mag.
Ruger Super Blackhawk 4 5/8" SS.
Springfield Armory XD 5" 9mm.
Glock 17.
S&W M&P 9mm.

I like the idea of the Ruger SP as a "slip in the pocket when I go out at night to ..." gun. I don't currently own a .357 and would have to buy reloading dies and components.

The SBH as a hunting/walking around in the woods handgun. I already have a Ruger BH in .41mag and a RH in .44mag. I do reload .44 so that is a plus to the SBH.

The three 9mms. I don't have any 9mm handguns. I'm thinking everybody should own at least one? Ammo can be found reasonably priced sometimes. Would make a good gun for the wife and kids to shoot. I don't have much experience with the three models listed, what is the best?

I've got the rimfire bases covered and living in Illinois, ccw is but a distant dream. This will basically be a "just because" purchase except for the SBH which I could use to hunt.

Any comments?

I voted Glock

But I think that the 101 would be a great choice as well. I voted Glock not because I like Glocks, but because I don’t like them, but still respect them. Weird, I know, but that’s how it is. If you don’t have a 9mm, I would say to get the Glock because they are dead reliable and easy to shoot. Also, around these parts, 9mm is cheaper than 357 or 38spl, so if ammo price is a factor, that might help as well.

Tough -- I would go w/ the SP101 or the Glock (since you're talking 9mm, I'll suggest the G19)...if there has to be a pecking order, I'd probably go w/ the Glock 1st

A small point... the SP101 is not a good "slip in the pocket" gun. It really needs to be holstered I've found. I have pocket carried mine, but it's definitely not a good match. It's just too heavy.

That being said, it's a helluva gun. I'm in the process of finding some less-than-full power rounds for mine that will still hit POA.

I own the sp101 and the S&W M&P in 9mm. I like shooting them both. The sp101 is a little heavy for pocket carry. The 9mm is an awesome semi auto. Your choice but if you get either of the ones I have you will not be disappointed.

Since you don't have one I voted Glock. Get the 17 or 19. I also like the SP101 but also don't count out the S&W 686 I happen to like the tribber better than the Ruger but both are great guns. I guess the big question is? another revolver or a semi-auto pistol?

I found myself thoroughly impressed with the M&P 9mm I was shooting last week. As soon as I determine which caliber I want, I will likely purchase one myself.

Glock

+1 on the glock because your right everyone needs a 9mm, but also glock 9mm are the kind of gun that will save your life some day, round count, accurate, and dependable. ALso if you so desire you can modify the crap out of it.:fire:

Glock/XD/M&P - All are great guns so get whichever one is most comfortable in your hand. 9mm autos are tough to beat as an all around handgun. Ammo is widely available, it's generally the least expensive centerfire round you can buy, and 9mm is still plenty for defensive use as well. It leads to a gun in a serious use caliber that's cheap, easy, and fun to plink and practice with. In your price range I'd also look at CZs, BHPs, FN FNPs, and used SIGs. With 9mm ammo you don't save as much money reloading, and the short cases are more difficult to load than .38/.357.

On the other hand I love my S&W K frame .38 Special & .357 Mag revolvers. All that stuff above about a cheap, fun, and easy to shoot serious use caliber applies to .38 & .357 revolvers, but with slightly higher factory ammo costs. However, with a .357 Mag revolver you have a wider range of loads, from powder puff .38s to full house .357 mags. In that respect an SP-101, GP-100, 686, or similar revolver has many merits. Reloading .38 target loads will save you more vs. factory ammo than reloading 9mm will, plus it's cheap and easy to boot.

In conclusion I'd go 9mm in your flavor of choice if you want to shoot factory ammo, and .357 mag if you want to reload. Though I really think you should buy whichever one now, and the other as your next gun because I can't imagine not having at least one handgun chambered for each of those.

I voted for the sp101 as it is one of the best snubbies out the IMO. I have the M&P 9c and it is a great litte gun. I can't wait to buy the big brother. You really can't go wrong with any of the 9mm you have listed. It's all about what you like more.

The Glock 19 is hard to beat for value, weight, capacity, and available gear. However, the M&P has a much better feel to it and is comparable in every way. The only downside to the M&P is that it doesn't have the tried and true service record that Glock has, YET. I think it is well on its way to getting there.

Thanks for all the replies.

After looking at ammo prices today, the 9mm is looking the best.

I've still got plenty of time to decide, anybody else wanna offer their opinions?

sure you could buy a glock and feel pretty good about yourself, but you could also prove that you know how to appreciate the finer things in life and get the blackhawk. just my 2c.

+1 for the xd, consider one in .45 acp. Even if your not carrying, just having 14 rounds on tap is fun at the range and great for home defense.

I went SP101. Everybody should have a .357, and they're tough as a stone axe... I love mine, quite a fun little cannon.

Plus you'll want a Blackhawk in the same caliber afterward... :D

I would go with a Glock. That was my first gun.

Make sure to handle each model first to see what's comfortable. The G19 is the best all-around but it was too small for my hands, so I went with a G17 and a year later I bought a G26 for concealed carry. My G17 is still my favorite gun in my collection. If I could have only one gun, it would be that.
