I currently own a Ruger mini 30 that I want to use for deep woods deer and hog hunting. If I keep it, I'm going to send it here:

great west

for the mini 30 package B (trigger job, Accraglass with atomized aluminum, our barrel cut, crown and thread combo [for muzzle brake], gas port bushings, and a recoil buffer - $200 + shipping). I paid $487
and it is in the #187 range. It will group at 1.5 inches at 50 yards for 3 shot group. I'd like it to group within 2 inches at 100 yards.

I also want a varmint rifle. I'm leaning toward this:

savage

for $434.41. (I'm a southpaw shooter.)

Those are the options for option #1.

Or, a DPMS Panther Lo Pro Classic:

dpms

for $658.35, for which I can also get a 308 caliber upper. (IIRC)

Which would you do? Sell the mini for whatever you can get and buy the DPMS with two uppers, or fix the mini and buy the LH Savage?

thanx.

PinnedAndRecessed keep the Mini-30 and send to Great West I have one of my Mini-14s for trade for a Mini-30 and when I get one it will go to Great West for the works.

If you want a varmint rifle buy the Savage. It is a good value for the money and ranchers really don't like shooters to leave empty brass on the ground. You will have a hard time with fired brass so use a bolt gun. Two ranchers I know in SD will not let you use a semi on their property as they have had brass problems.

PinnedAndRecessed I had John at Great West do a trigger job, shorten barrel, add muzzel/flash and other things such as camo on one of my Mini-14s and the work was perfect. He has done my Mini-14, Mini-30 ,Saiga .308, M1 carbine to name a few and the results were the same.

I have ordered a 6.5 Grendel upper to fit my AR15 lower you might want to look into the 6.5 Grendel instead of the .308 in a AR.

22mag: What kind of groups were you getting on your mini before the work? What kind of groups do you get now?

thanx.

Sell the mini thirty and buy an SKS for 1/4 the price. It'll shoot that good right out of the box. Of course, the trigger usually sux on 'em, but hey, 3MOA is 3MOA. :D

Seriously, if I wanted a brush hunting gun, unless you're just stuck on that mini 30, IMHO a Marlin 336 in .30-30 is a better rifle, more accurate, heavier bullets, proven in American hunting woods for over 100 years. But, a tuned and trick mini 30 sounds really cool to own. I just can't get over the 3MOA after accurizing. :banghead: It's minute of deer, though, out to around 200 yards, so it should serve the purpose. I'm just a little more of an accuracy freak than that for as much as you're going to have in the gun. Hopefully, it'll shoot better, maybe 2 MOA.
