Hello all, I found a website, nelson tactical, that had a bunch of dpms 308's, also in upgraded configurations. I found one specifically that I REALLY like, but it's out of stock.

It's here http://www.nelsontactical.com/products/dpms-308-bull-24-w-many-upgrades-p-907.html

It's about 1900 dollars, but it also comes with the upgrades I'm looking for. If I were to get a dpms 308, it would HAVE to have:
Jp Trigger
Fluted threaded barrel with muzzle brake (preferably 24")
A3 upper with dust cover and forward assist
Magpul PRS stock
Free floating quad rail for A3 upper

So I'm asking, where can I find a dpms 308 with all those accessories for the best price? It seems to me if I buy those upgrades pre-installed, its less hassle and cheaper.

Also, I wanted the longest 24" barrel, because when I go shooting, I want to hit 1000 yards accurately and reliably. That brings up the question though, can I do that with a shorter barrel, like the 20" or 18" barrel? What about a 16" carbine 308? Can you hit a 1000 yards out?

When I went to the DPMS website, I built a 308 with the 24" bull barrel with these specific options (from the website):

Now, that configuration is nice, but for the full retail of $2,182.11, I bet I could find it cheaper in a gun shop locally or online. But where? Links, suggestions, maybe if I call DPMS I can get them to drop the price?

I mainly have just shot handguns, and I want this rifle for precision shooting, yet also be an all-around protection rifle, but mainly for target shooting.

Thanks in advance.

GPS Defense in Arizona has a POF P308 with a 14.5" barrel that is ringing 1200yd plates consistently with M118LR 175gr ammo. However, the general minimum recommended length for consistent 1000yd accuracy is 18". A lot of that will also have to do with ammunition. Going with a 175gr or 178gr load will give you the BC you need for consistent hits. 168gr ammo has shown to be less consistent at 1000yd engagements.

What this means is that getting a 24" barrel is nice for accuracy and velocity, but is really not a big deal. More and more snipers are shortening their barrels to the 20" and 18" range because they are more maneuverable, but can still hit out to 1k.

Building is always a less expensive way to go, but it does require that you have the tools and skills needed to properly assemble the rifle.
If you don't want to do that, you'll have to hire someone to build the rifle for you or find what you want from a manufacturer. I would encourage you to start looking around for custom shops or builders. However, $2182 for a semi-auto .308 is not really all that expensive. Consider that the LaRue OBR is $2995 and the GA Precision GAP-10 ranges between $2560-$3445, and those are both 0.3-0.5 MOA accurate.

If you call DPMS, they won't drop the price for you. Don't expect much in the way of financial help from them. It is what it is. The only way to get it for less is to buy through a dealer and have them mark their price down on their end. They can buy it for wholesale and then charge you whatever they want.

Save yourself $50 and ditch the chrome bolt. It's a useless upgrade, and really only has aesthetic value.
Fluting is nice to have for cooling, but only for cooling. Weight is really not an issue since you're already running with a 24" barrel, which is like a boat oar. Fluting will not reduce enough weight to make any significant difference. LR-308s are heavy rifles, plain and simple. Get it or don't, your choice. None of my AR barrels have fluting, and it's not an issue.

If you want something that is accurate and less expensive from DPMS, check out their 7.62 Mark12. It's sub-MOA capable, and costs $1709.

Well that sounds good, thank you. Is there anything the Mark12 has that the panther lr-308 doesnt? I really like the accessories on the one that i found, maybe I can call that website to order me one when I'm ready.

How would a dpms do vs a FAL type 308 of similar price range?

Its a shame you didn't post this sooner. I sold a DPMS LR308 to Cabelas about 2 1/2 months ago cause I needed the money. Paid 1300 for it. Had the 24" bull barrel, a3 upper, quad rail, JP trigger. No forward assist or dust cover, and barrel was not threaded. But I ended up letting it go for 600 bucks. I really needed the cash. I wasn't even completely done breaking it in. About 200 rounds through it. At that price you would have had a lot of money left over for mods.

DPMS builds-to-order, so no one will have that exact rifle, and they are running several months behind. Expect a custom order to take 6 months.

How would a dpms do vs a FAL type 308 of similar price range?
Even with DSA using new barrels on SA rifles (not surplus barrels anymore), DPMS will likely be more accurate, although individual copies may vary. Also, with the JP trigger option, DPMS has a better trigger than an FAL-type could ever hope for.

I own both, an STG-58 parts rifle and a JP-equipped DPMS 308. DPMS is a much better shooter, but an FAL gets huge style points. ;)
