At an Estate auction I bought a box of miscellaneous things from the guys reloading room and this part has me perplexed. I feel like I should know what it is but can't place it. If anyone can help identify it so I can move on to thinking about something else I'd appreciate it!

Not that quick, I had to look at your pics more than once before it clicked. My gut said the smaller side was a tool for a post sight. Then I remembered that the A1 rear sight didn't have the knob the A2 does.

I suppose I really should get an A1 to go with the tool.
Yes... yes you should.

Given what it is - it's a truly ironic-pleasure to go *old-school* with those aluminum and plastic wonders.

I specifically like pre-A-2 architecture with match sights when optics-option is not necessary.

Light, accurate and strangely good looking these days.

Todd.

Actually it is an armorer’s tool for quick, major, sight adjustments or sight removal, replacement on new guns or guns under repair. The minor adjustment was to be done by a loaded round’s bullet tip, one click at a time, by the GI to whom the gun was issued during sight in, unless a major change was needed. The rear sight adjusted for windage, large end of tool, the front sight adjusted for elevation only, the small diameter end of the tool.

The first M-16s, once give a battle sight setting, were good out to 300 meters, the max effective range of the then 55gr bullet at 3,150 fps. The flip rear sight was for quick change from close and long range. This was an assault rifle, not a battle rifle at that time.
