Help me pick a Rem870

So, I've been thinking, I'd like to have the capability to shoot magnum loads. The Marine magnum however has a nickel finish. I just think it looks kind of weird. I'm so used to my guns being black with a few exceptions.

Is there an LE model, parkerized and with machined internals, that is capable of handling magnum loads and has a high capacity?

Cheese, the nickel finish resists saltwater contamination.

Saltwater envoironment is a possibility in our future so we went with it.

Easy to keep clean anyhow. No biggie.

Now.. otoh, a bit of silver bling tends to freeze certain BG's long enough with it's allure.

I prefer function over form, I point to the recent Rem 870 Tower gun for police thread as a example.

I realize that this is why it has that finish.

I'll put it to you this way, I like guns in any color, as long as that color is black. ;) I guess there's a little bit of Mr. Ford in me.

The only guns I have that aren't black are my 2 Kahr MK40 Elites and my 2 Smith & Wesson 642s. Everything else is black somehow, either blued, anodized, or some other similar finish. I didn't get the MK40 Elites in black because you can't, and I didn't get a 442 over a 642 just because.... well, actually there is no good reason. I didn't seem to care as much with a pocket J-frame I guess.

But hey, if you guys like it - that's great. :) I'm just looking for flat black, specifically parkerized in this case if possible. Fortunately, I'm moving very very very far away from the current saltwater environment I live in. 1,500+ miles away (and I'm looking forward to it!) I will be in land of 10,000 lakes, but I think they're all freshwater.

Remington 870

I have a 12 Gauge Remington 870 Express with the 7-shot Tube for which I paid $300.00 in June last year. I also sprung for a Blackwater Knoxx recoil-reducing Stock at $120.00. Quite frankly, I love it, and the stock really works to do what it says it'll do. (I don't particularly like recoil, and at 67 years, I'm not as hardy as you young bucks out there.) I like to shoot Fiocchi 00 Buck Reduced Recoil rounds for HD, but at the range I just pick up some cheap Field rounds at Walmart. Anyway, this Shotgun doesn't whack me too much harder than my RR Tactical Entry AR. It's a combination I'd recommend to anyone! Just IMO.

.cheese.

Yes, the 24421 has a 3" chamber. You can fire 2.75" or 3" shells in them. Go with the 24221 and don't look back. You'll pay a couple hundred dollars more but you get what you pay for.

Can the LE model 24421 handle magnum loads?

Yes it can shoot 3" magnums. It won't handle the 3.5" super magnums though. They aren't all that much fun anyway. I've owned a 20" bead sighted, wood stocked 870P for the last 8 yrs or so and it is nice shotgun. The finish held up well for me. The only thing I didn't like was the 8lb trigger pull in the police model. Eventually I ordered a standard weight spring and it definitely helped the trigger pull. I originally got it with the speedfeed stock on it. Shooting lefty, I couldn't get a good cheek weld due to the shell holder placement. The shell holders started dropping shells under recoil after a while. I replaced it with the solid speedfeed (no shell holders), which had a very solid feel for a synthetic stock. Eventually I put some police walnut on it and that how it lives now.

Yes, the 24421 has a 3" chamber.

Excellent. That was the info I needed. :)

I will get pricing tomorrow. If I can afford it, I'll buy 2 as I buy my guns in pairs, but I think I won't have the cash for a second. That might have to wait a few months.

3" chamber gives flexibility, but you really only want to be using 2.75" loadings for your application. In fact, several knowledgable trainers say the reduced 2.75" loadings have all the power you need for HD and related. Such loadings are also used by the US Border Patrol, who are arguably the most active policing agency using shotguns in gunfights in the US today...

(That should precipitate comment :)

perhaps... I just think it would be nice to have the option. It doesn't have to be only for HD/SD.

I wouldn't even think about a 3 1/2" Super Magnum. You WILL be shooting 2 3/4" most of the time. Although I don't have first-hand experience with the SM, there seem to be more reports of problems feeding 2 3/4" shells in a 3 1/2" SM than in the 3" Magnum guns.

I can make my gun cough out a three inch shell using a hemlich manuver if I had to. It depends on the crappy metal bases of these things. So far Im just a tad careful what I feed to my finiky and gaggy 870 on those three inchers.

2.75's all day and half the week. More than sufficient for HD.

Im just glad I dont have to fight a bolt. The Action opens with the pump.

Plenty of opinions here. I'm adding to the pile...

Get a used 870 with a short barrel.

Buy all the ammo you can and shoot it up. Repeat frequently.

About the time the hulls reach past your ankles, you'll.....

A, be deadly with just about any shotgun.

And B, have a better idea of what YOUR shotgun and YOU need.

Just watch your step when you learn which shell is too hot for you. Dont slip on em.

One other thing. Those shotguns teach you quickly how to hold em, they get hot to handle after a few rounds. 5 rounds not too bad, but after 30? Whoo eee.

Not sure if you mean a SBS. If so, to my knowledge, SBS's are illegal in the state I'm moving to.

Additionally, I'm a sucker for always buying new. ;)

in any case, as Gozer the Traveler once said (in Ghostbusters) - "A choice has been made."

Rem 870P model 24421 is the choice. NIB.

If people know approximately what I should expect to pay for one, that would be helpful as I shop for where to order from. Then again, there's only 2 LGSs that are LE suppliers and could order it for me, so I suppose my choices are limited.

I'm with Dave Mc. on buying an older 870 Wingmaster for a home defense shotgun.:)

They are made better IMHO than what Big Green is manufacturing today. :cuss:

Now, I'll also add a plug for the NEF pardner pump in ANY form.

Built tank tough and made with solid materials in a field grade quality gun.

I have two in 12 and 20 gauge and am very happy with both.

But if it's Remington you want, good on ya and like I said, go for an older 870 and you'll have an excellent firearm to protect home and hearth.:D

I appreciate the opinion. As I said in post 46 though:

I understand. They're very similar - that's true. I do like the parkerized finish though.

The police model is probably a lot more money for only a slightly "better" gun. I'm willing to pay it though. Whether I can afford 2, I don't know yet. I definitely can afford 1 though.

The Police Models probably feature certian things not availible to cheaper models. Save a little and those guns will be worth it.

I cried all the way home having paid twice for my mag than what spouse paid for her moss. But after that first shoot... it's all about love. Down to the last penny.

When a gun you pick fits you perfect in your hands and everything is right there.... love.

Cheap? Hassle.

I didn't say that I decided to get an 870P because the Express is a bad gun.

No Sir, you did not.

Your implied that there are some features of the Police that may or may not be worth the cost different.

Please for humor once, can you tell me what features different that you thought not worth the price different?

We all have different opinions and agree to disagree, Im simply asking these questions to more precisely nail down your choice versus a police model.

Have a great day!
