I'm a fan of non-cookie cutter handuns too. The Steyr M9A1, Bersa Thunder 9 HC and Canik TP9 and TP9SA are ugly in a pleasant way.

I would have to go with others who have suggested a used Third Generation S&W auto, probably in a compact size (like a Model 6906 or a 6946), to make it easier to use within the confines of your vehicle.

Ruger P series. Can't get much more SUV than that and what a bargain built like a tank. Never fail reliability with any ammo you can find. 17rd Mecgar mags avail give you 17+1

I voted TriStar CZ clone but specify the compact model...they are fun to shoot and quite well made.. I've only tried one in 380, but holy crap was it a good shooter so the 9x19 version should be good too. ;)
