i'm trying to decide on my next rifle. i've narrowed my choices down to 3
-SA SOCOM 16
-AR 10
-m4 .223

i previously owned a bushmaster ar and was quite happy with it. i've never shot the ar-10 so i'm curious about the recoil overall handling of the weapon. i've shot a fullsized m1a and would like a chopped down version.

i'll mainly be using this for the range, some hunting and home defense.

Go for the Socom, I don't own one (YET), but it's been highly recomended to me. I've never been a big fan of the AR platform. Whatever you get, enjoy.

tah-dah

go with the armalite AR 10. BUSHMASTER is a great gun too, but armalite does the AR 10 proud, and you got to love a 308

Any of these rifles should serve you well. If you are interested in shooting at longer ranges go for the SOCOM or the AR-10. If you are shooting at shorter ranges and want to carry more ammo go for M4 clone.

I voted SOCOM. My personal preference would be a barrel of 18" or longer though, but if it were going to D the H, 16" is fine but I'd have to get a can for that beast.

that SOCOM is loud. If you have to use it for home defense once you'll probably be deaf...
but it is a great gun, the 18inch scout squad would probably be a better choice though

You may also want to look at a LWRC or SR556 .223
Good reliable ar's that you could get a .308 upper for when you want to go hunting.

But all around best option I'm gonna stick with the m1a scout. The .308 wasn't designed for a 16 inch barrel and you will eliminate alot of its positives and have a longer recovery time for the next shot. the 18 inch scout is a compromise between short and long barrel that will give you the best of both worlds, so to say.

I don't like to tell guys to ditch their choices and go with mine, but since we're now talking about the scout, I have to give it a +1. If Clyde's would ever get another Sage Mod 1 stock, I'd swing for it before I even had the M1A in hand.:D

I'd scratch home defense off if you get a .308 (too much punch), and scratch off hunting if you live in areas that don't allow .223 or non-sporting rifles.

I'd go with the SOCOM since you know that you like the M1A. I'd skip the AR-10 since buying out of curiosity can bite you badly. I'd also skip on the M4 if, despite you being happy with a .223 AR in the past, weren't happy enough to keep it.

Persoanlly I have wanted an Ar-10 in 243 for a while now...recoils wil be less than a comparable bolt in the caliber you choose. Gas operation cuts it down. Muzzle blast may be a little higher depending on barrel length

i went with a ss loaded becuse i got a good deal on a used one, but if i bought a new m1a it would be the scout.

thanks for the responses.

i had completely forgot about the scout model m1a, thanks.

it wasn't that i wasn't happy with it enough to keep it. i sold it along with alot of other guns to help my mother out while she was sick and out of work. i hated to get rid of it but you gotta do what you gotta do. i would like to have another one it's just that i can't decide if i want it now or later.

thanks i'll definetly be checking into these.

i say go with the ar, it is handier especially in the confines of your home, and they are fun to shoot, and there is a wealth of accesories you can put on them for the specifics of HD. Ie a light etc.

if you can find a bushmaster ar-10 (they don't make them anymore, but they take the FAL mags.)
