I currently do not own any centerfire rifles (just handguns, a shotgun, and a 10/22) and am looking to get that portion of my collection started on the right foot. I'm thinking I want to get a .223 and a .308, and have narrowed it down to these two pairs.

Pair A: Custom built AR-15, SA M1A Scout
Pair B: Ruger Mini-14, DSA SA58 (FAL)

Pair A would be much more expensive, mainly due to the AR, but the AR is something I could continue to invest in and improve over time, and not to mention be proud of. With this pair, the AR would be my choice for a home defense/ emergency situation gun.

Pair B would be far less expensive, but without the character and continued improvement offered by a custom gun. With this pair, the FAL would become my defense gun, and I'd use the Ruger for recreational shooting.

The reason I don't want both a Mini-14 and an M1A, or both an AR-15 and an FAL, is because I want some variety (ie, one 'black' rifle, one M1-style). Let me know what you think!

If it were my choice, I'd pick one rifle and spend my extra money on ammo and training. Much better investment than two rifles.

Of the two choices I like the second better...but truth be told I would rather have the AR (with a piston) and FAL than either.

:)

The AR and the DSA Fal would also be my choice. I have all 4 except my M1A is a super match instead of the scout, and don't get me wrong, it is a really nice rifle and I like it alot, but if push came to shove, I'd have go with my FAL.
