Okay, I absolutely have my heart set on a SUB 2000. Not for any particular purpose, although I'm sure I can think of something (probably shooting in whichever practical matches allow pistol-caliber carbines). Also plan on getting one in .40 S&W.

I have my eye set on a couple of .40-caliber pistols, but wouldn't you know it, Beretta, S&W, SIG, and Glock aren't among them! (If you're curious: CZ, Steyr, and maybe some sort of single-stack.) So there's no simple answer of just picking the SUB 2000 that goes with my favorite pistol. I'll just pick based on the ease of getting decent magazines.

Now I'm completely ignorant of what magazine availability is like for those makers. So what are (a) prices, (b) availability, (c) capacities, and (d) quality for the various magazines available? I don't want to pick style A if style B is sold by twice as many outlets and style C is much better for the cost. I sort of have an answer for (c): Glocks seem to be available in up to 13 rounds; SIGs up to 12, while Berettas go up to 11.

Also, am wondering about how to go about getting exactly what I want. If my local stores don't stock the caliber/magazine combination I want, is it worthwhile asking them to broker me a gun I find online? What is a reasonable charge to do the FFL transfer rigamorole?

glock mags are the easiest to get, hold up to 33 rounds, are relatively cheap, and as an added bonus, you can use 9mm mags with .40s&w.

If you get the Sub2000, why not get a Glock, Beretta or Smith pistol? That way you can use the same mags on the carbine and pistol. To me this is one of the useful features of buyinig the Sub2000. All three offer hi cap mags which is another added bonus.

Now if you want to stick with CZ or Steyr, I say Steyr all the way. I've owned a few CZs and Steyrs, so I can tell you based on my personal experience. CZ's are very reliable and great price point, but they are a bit on the heavy side. The P-01 fit my hand perfectly, but I had an issue with CZUSA. The issue was finally resolved with a NIB P-01, but it took some time to get it resolved. CZ mags aren't cheap through CZ, but it's the most cloned pistol in the world. You can find cheaper EAA mags that will work in the CZ's as well.

If you plan on carrying your pistol...Steyr is definately the way to go. The max capacity for a Steyr in 40 is 12rds. CDNN sells the hi cap mags and they also have great deals on the Steyr pistols.

If I were you, I'd definately considering buying 9mm sub and pistols for price alone. Even if you reload, ammo and reloading componets are on the rise. Save some money on 9mm over 40.
