I looking at buying a new AR15 within the next couple of weeks, but still haven't decided which one to buy. Start off with, what is the difference in the A2,A3 and the A4 models? I'm leaning towards the rock river arms Standard A4 20'' barrel or the Varmint with the 20'' barrel. I'm wanting one that you can mount a 50mm scope to for long range shooting (200/300 yards max). Would the bull barrel varmint series be better suited for long range shooting? Is there any other AR15, that I should consider? I'm wanting to buy a complete rifle to start out with, then maybe build a second AR15 in the future. All help will be appriciated. Thanks, Gary!

Why don't you go to the websites of the ar15 manufacturers?...they have pictures and everything you need to know about the rifles on there...

In civilian terms, A3 and A4 are generally interchangeable terms that refer to the upper being a flat top...

A2 generally refers to a fixed carry handle upper.

Flat tops are better, no disputing that.

You'll also hear A2 in reference to the standard birdcage flash hider with a closed bottom, the standard military style/size fixed buttstock, etc...

For the specific type of AR setup you seem to be interested in, I would recommend RRA over any other. Good quality at a good price.

I generally don't care for bull and Heavy barrels. I build rifles with self defense in mind, number one. If you're gonna be shooting from a bench or in competition, heavy barrels will give you a slight advantage...

If you want an M4 style AR, I'd recommend a Stag...
