i recently turned 21 in the "GREAT" state of new york and am in the process of applying for my pistol permit in niagara county(thank god i got out of erie, those of you in erie know what i am talking about, GOOD LUCK if you are).

i am interested in a compact pistol, i have hopes of ccw, in 9mm, 40, or .357 sig

glock 19-9mm, 23- .40, or 32- .357

or

H&K usp compact 9mm, .40, .357

or

any other sugestions

thanks mike :banghead:

Good choices there. Can't go wrong with either. If going to 40 check out the Glock 23, A very small good handgun is the KAHR. I gave one to my son for his HS grad. He has a CC License. (in NH no age limit). He loves the gun. Very concealable and works well. Double action only.

Hmmm, the .45 USP Compact is noticeably absent in your list of choices. But since they're like the other USPc's, I'll offer that I've been extremely impressed with mine.

Used to own a Glock 19, I was pleased with that too, but traded up as I felt comfortable with more fire power at my disposal and wanted something that I could carry cocked and locked similar to a 1911.

Basically you're good either way and it comes down to a matter of preference. Glocks are uber-reliable, but so are USPc's, and the latter feels better in my hand, so that's what I carry. Good luck!

Have you considered one of these? Sigs are top of the line just like HK but slightly less expensive. I recently ditched my P7M8 for a P228 for carry. The HK was a great gun but the Sig has 50% larger mag capacity and isn't being discontinued this year.

Take a look at the CZ line of guns. I have a the PCR Compact 9 mm. and love it. The newest version is the P101 and it gets raves. See how it feels in your hand and you will see why it is winning many people over and the price is great.

select pistol

Talk to your dealer about a Sig recertified pistol. I got a P229 for $480 + tax and it handles and shoots great, smooth, crisp trigger. Go to Sigarms website, they have a page explaining how their checked and tested. Mine is a .40,and you can get droppin barrels of 9MM and 357sig and have a 3 for one gun.

Mike,

Would you ask me to buy you the "correct" car for your transportation needs.....I think not. The same is true for your firearm.

Please seek out a gun club or gun range that will rent you a gun of your choice to try. We can all offer "our" favorites.....but they are "our" favorites. I am not saying disreguard the information given here by all these great forum participants....just take in all the good stuff and go find "your" gun. Your life may depend on it.

Good Luck

Great advice given here.

My 2 cents:

Don't but a firearm by asthetic value only. You can sit in your chair all evening fondling a "cool" looking gun but the truth lies in comfort, control, & capacity.

As has been offered here before, go to a range and rent a few guns to give a formal review. Make a checklist noting everything you are looking for in a handgun. Give honest appraisals of each. Then come back here and do a search on those guns to get reviews on dependability, customer service, etc.

Then you can feel good about your decision and investment.

I do live in Erie

Mike,

I have covered every carry scenerio so far by carring my Kahr k-9 and/or Smith and Wesson (ultra) lightweight revolver 342-1pd. The Kahr is a thin pistol and very easy to hide. The ultra light smith-wesson revolvers are very easy to carry, not as much fun to shoot.

At work I wear a suit and I carry the revolver in my front pocket. At only 10 ounces it just disappears. The Kahr rides (in a holster) inside the car's center console during working hours.

When I am not at work the Kahr becomes the primary weapon, worn stong-side and the revolver serves as backup in the pocket (of cargo-pants),or the car's center consule. The pocket of cargo pants presents the revolver well from a seated position, especially when driving a car.

At home the house gun is a Mossburg 500 in pursuader configuation, the pistol serves as nightstand gun.

This arrangement, including presence of mind, pepper spray and a surefire 6P are working for me now. It may or may not work for you.

If you make the trip back to Erie, we can meet at the range and you are welcome to shoot whatever I have.

Jeff

Look around and shoot what you can. Hold all the others. Buy what is comfortable and conceals well with your chosen method of carry. I love my usp40c. My shooting buddy likes it, but loves his Kahr .40 much more. It truely is personal preference. That all being said, some pistol do have a good reputation for a reason. Sig's, H&K's, Glocks, etc... are pretty reliable and durable guns. Usually they need no work to make them perfect. Sometimes the addition of a better set of sights makes a difference. What I'm saying is that the good reputation of these pistols is well deserved and you'll be well served by the one that fits you best.

I have to take the time to pimp out CZ. My favorte handgun gun at any price. If you can find a range that rents them, or people willing to let you try theirs, give them a shot. Quality weapons with the best ergonomics (for me at any rate) at reasonable prices.

For CCW my main recomendation is the PCR for it's lighter weight. If weight doesn't bother you, I love my 85 Compact. All steel, 10 rounds of 40 S&W, compact, and thanks to the heavy front end for the light rail, very little muzzle flip. Almost identical to the full size in 9mm.
