I am coming from shooting a 357 and am trying to trade it and two shotguns to get a new carry pistol. I want to spend around 750 for it, but I want a very reliable and compact pistol in either 9mm or 38. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Remember folks, in these threads we just rattle off our favorite handguns and calibers rather than try to give a direct answer.

It depends on how compact. A g26 has been reliable, although that's mostly with FMJ. I think a g27 is the same size and in .40. (Although the g26 has enough recoil already)

I'd like to recommend the HK P7.

1. Thin (Single stack 9mm)
2. Safe (Squeeze cocker)
3. Reliable (Simple mechanics)
4. Accurate (Over 4" fixed barrel in VERY compact package.)
5. Ergonomic (Points naturally)
6. Trigger - (Almost as good as a 1911)

Not made anymore but parts are readily available. Like "new" ones can be found from various sources from $600-$750.

A number of good possibilities are out there, including ones that already have been mentioned thus far. Toss in the Walther PPS as still another consideration, in either 9mm or .40S&W. Just make sure that whatever you get, you try it, test it, shoot it, fire it, work with it, and then do it all again before you decide to make it your own ... and especially before you make it your primary carry gun, if that is what you have in mind.

I'm VERY partial to CZs so...

CZ P-01 or 75 PCR... both are Compacts... super quality, all metal guns... 9mm... and are EXTREMELY reliable and accurate!

Go to a range or shop... hold em, shoot em and see which one YOU like best!

You'll never go wrong with a CZ... but prices are startin to move UP... not quite the bargin they once were!

Another option is the SIG P-6 (W.German LEO turn-ins)... Have a couple and they're great guns at a real good price (under $400)... and a Sig is a Sig!

Another vote for the CZ PCR or P01, have a PCR and love it. A 15# mainspring helps the DA tirgger pull greatly, and there are a couple of sellers who also can do trigger jobs on CZs.

Also the Glock 26, I've got a 27 and it made me like the platform, plus the slide and barrel are just about impervious to rust and the they are definitely reliable. Accurate too, especially out of pistols in their size class.

Also I have an FNP9-M, the compact model of the FNP. It is a very nice size, reliable, and has a smooth trigger. Also the mag release can be switched to the other side if you want.
