Hey all, recently picked up a DPMS Oracle. Felt the need for a basic 5.56 carbine, and just sold a lawnmower, so what the heck. Was looking for a more refined rifle, but being 35 miles from MPLS, options were limited LOL. Mounted a 1x4.5 Vortex, and accuracy with a basic handload is surprisingly good. Seems like a solid, basic rifle. Pleasantly surprised.

Now for the bad. There is no provision for mounting a forward sling swivel/loop. There is a small rail forward of the handguard (top rail only), and I've found an accessory that attaches to this for a side mounted carabiner or hook type sling. There are also 2 small hex bolts on the underside of this piece that might be a point for attachment.

I'm used to military/service rifle style slings. What are folks using on MSRs these days? The "tactical" options are a bit bewildering to me. Looking for a good solid sling and mount system that can be looped service rifle style for enhanced LR marksmanship, and be useful for informal 3 gun style shoots, hunting, and casual shooting.

I know that it's not the looped service rifle sling, but if the rig were limited to side-mounted, I think I'd consider an old-fashioned patrol sling. Then you hafta be sure it's long enough to give enough leeway. That may or may not help.

I use a Magpul MS1 with the QD swivels on each end. You'll need QD sockets on your stock or handguard, but you can use a different swivel connector if you wish. The different options are numerous.

My favorites are the BFG Vickers slings as I don't like the "tail" on the VTAC. I've also got a Magpul MS4, that remains in 2Pt mode, but I prefer the BFG Vickers.

I have both the Padded (FAL) and several of the plain, honestly for an M4ish gun the non-padded is fine.

I recently purchased a couple of these for my hunting rifles:

for $25.90 it's a really good quick adjust sling that's designed for ARs, but works really well on just about anything that you'd want a quick adjust for.

That is the gas block. The two set screws underneath hold it in place. I would not recommend using a set-screwed gas block as the sling mount. If it is used as a sling mount, it is possible with enough movement to have the set screws back out, loosen the gas block, and then you are wondering why your rifle is a single shot. Ask me how I know. (This doesn't occur with the common triangle front sight (FSB) because the barrel is drilled and steel pins to hold it.)

There are going to be a lot of sling recommendations, but the real issue is how do you mount it.
The cheapest option is probably the Proctor sling above since it just loops and doesn't need hardware.
I've seen people use paracord to loop around the barrel to create a front sling loop. (That is basically what Proctor's sling does.) If you liked the Blue Force or Vtac better, that is the low cost attachment.
The more expensive method would be to use a drop in handguard that had an attachment point - whether that is polymer or something aluminum. Then, buy the appropriate sling hardware.

A few options, something is likely to fit your rifle. Magpul offers numerous options for QD or paraclip attachment and slings with corresponding hardware.

Think I'll be going with the Proctor sling. The minimalist nature and price tag fit my operational envelope (overcomplicated from "I like it" for the tacticool crowd;))
