Recent work overseas has left me with some money burning a hole in my pocket. For the first time ever I can actually buy what I want with the accessories and features I want and not have to worry about paying the mortgage, too.

Here are my guidelines:

Caliber: 9x19
Action: No DAO (hammer or striker fired OK)
Type: Semiauto (of course)
Capacity: 15+1 (minimum)
Manual Safety: Optional but preferred
Decocker: Optional but preferred
Size: Full
Manufacturer: ???
Other: Don't want slide rails but can live with them, would like to be able to put laser grips (Crimson Trace?) on it (maybe), definitely want to have a .22 conversion kit for cheap practice.
Price: Would like to keep the total package under $1500.00
Use: home and personal defense, target, plinking, general all-around pistol with extreme reliability and durability.

Given all that, what would you recommend?

Since you want a 22 conversion to fit the 9mm you are left with three brand choices. The Berreta 92,CZ75,and Glock(17,19).If you get the Glock, get the Advatage Arms conversion instead of Ciener.Berreta makes a 22 conversion for the 92 and EAA makes the conversion for the CZ.CW

SIG 228...I think that meets your criteria...im not sure if crimson trace makes some laser grips for it.

Glock 17 or CZ 75. If CZ 75, with Hakan grips:

Hakan's CZ Stocks

I'd look first at the CZ. They can be had for $400-425 out the door, 16 rounders around $40 where legal...

Spend the money you save on ammo and training.

The CZ 75BD. IMHO, it is the best value in an autoloader. Great trigger, tough as nails, reliable, and VERY accurate. The .22 LR conversion kit is called the Kadet. I don't own one but have heard they are accurate also. FWIW. :)

Sig 226 all the way.

Thought it doesnt have a .22 conversion kit with the remaining money you can always get a Ruger 22/45. They are running around 200 bucks now a days for the P512 model.

Actually, there are a few 9mm 1911s out there too and there are quite a few choices in .22 conversion kits for 1911s. A 1911 isn't a DA/SA gun so no decocker but it does have a very convenient frame mounted safety. Also, the Taurus PT92 has .22 conversions available.

I think any of those choices (Beretta 92, Taurus PT92, CZ 75B/85B, 1911 and maybe Glock) would do just fine.

Chaim,

He wants 15+ capacity and I don't know of any 1911 hicap 9mms,you are right about the Taurus but I believe the only conversion for it is a Ciener which is not the best conversions available.CW

Just send it all to me via paypal to [email protected] and I'll spend it all for you - no problem.

I'd get a Beretta 92 Compact L with some nice wood grips and a slick leather holster for it. Then have Ernest Langston bless it and lay spells of ruin upon it.

Current jones of the moment. If anyone in Utah want to trade for a used 92FS... I'm game. But I'm keeping some of my high caps for the Beretta Cx4 Storm.

Sig P226 again. Just one heck of a 9mm, reliable, robust, elegant, and very high capacity.

Thanks for all the input, the responses seem to be where I was leaning myself: 92FS or a P226.

I have a lot of experience with the 92FS but none with the SIG line of products.

What would the input be that would make the SIG preferable to the 92FS. I understand that my personal likes and dislikes would weigh very heavy for this issue so I'll just say that I really like the Berettas and have had several of them in the past. The ergonomics are great, I love the size and even the weight of the Beretta 92 . . . so what would make the SIG a comparable or more desireable pistol?

Well, that's a good question. SIG vs Beretta toe to toe is a tough match.
BOTH guns are super high quality. Accuracy and reliability are both top notch. Both can be fed from high cap mags that are easy to find at a good gunshow and don't cost even half of what a Glock mag costs.

Really in this case it's Blondes vs Brunettes now.

You'll have to try them both side by side to see which one fits in your hand better.

Try the Vertec model of the Beretta - more vertical grip, reduced in size compared to the standard Model 92, making it much easier to reach the trigger with smaller hands.

I have to admit, though, with your budget, I'd buy two CZ-75's, a .22 conversion kit, a dozen hi-cap magazines, and a couple of decent holsters. I'd still have change left over for ammunition! (and perhaps [drool] a set or two of Hakan grips... [/drool]!). I prefer the CZ to either the Beretta or SIG in 9mm. I also like (and carry) the Glock, but this doesn't fit your requirement of an external safety.
