Help me understand this gun shop practice.

I don't know about all mom and pop stores, but I refuse to do business with our local one any more.

I have a Wilson Combat AR15 up for sale in the for sale forum that belongs to a friend of mine. Before it got listed here he went to the local shop without it and he and the owner struck a deal on it for a RRA AR15 and a lower end AK. A pretty close to even swap, IIRC my friend had to add a few dollars to the deal.

The following day he took it to the shop to go through with the deal and the owner backed out and said all he could do was the RRA and 100 bucks for the Wilson leaving about a 400-500 buck gap in the AK.

This isn't the first time this shop has tried to screw either of us, so we're both done dealing with him.
 
The deal was offered and, if he was happy with it, should have done the deal on the spot instead of being wishy-washey. Some one may have went in and made a deal on the AK after he left the shop. Ya snooze, Ya loose.

BTW, do you know what a customer means when he says "Let me think about it and I'll be back"?

I think you are out of your mind but I'm to big a coward to tell you so to your face.

OR, I have to go get on the internet and ask a bunch of strangers what they think before I can make a commitment.

OR, I have to go ask my wife for permission.

OR, I have to go and shoot up all my ammo before we do the deal and bring the gun to be traded in back in a totally filthy condition.

And so one.
 
It's the same reason that if you trade in a car to a dealer, they want to do as little to it as possible before they sell it. It's money out of the profit margin. If the shop pays $25-30 for a magazine, it's not like they can hang a tag on it that says; "Price increased to reflect our sacrifice in bringing this gun to minimum working order. Thank you for your understanding."
