I am trying to help my brother in law sight in his Mossberg 100 ATR .270 for deer season. What deer hunting ammo works best for this gun? It has a 22 inch barrel with a 1:10 twist rate.
There is no clear cut answer, he will need to try a few to see what works best in the gun. Different guns with the same length barrel, and twist rate can have very different ammo preferences, even with the same make and model. That being said, most .270's will shoot any of the 130gr factory loads fairly well.
130gr in either Remington Core-Lokt, Federal Power-Shok, or Winchester Power Point. I have rarely run into a 270 that didn't do well with some sort of 130gr.
Mine shoots Fusion 130's into one-inch groups at 100 yards with a fixed 4x Nikon scope mounted.
It shoots 130 grain Core-Lokts into about an inch and a quarter to an inch and a half.
They both have killed deer for me with one-shot. They both have exited large deer leaving good blood trail for the short amount of distance that they ran if they didn't bang-flop.
Cool. Thanks for y'all's input. The first time out(several months ago) we could t get the gun to shoot straight at all (barely on paper at 50 yds). I think the barrel just needed to be broken in bc we used a few different types of 130 grain soft point ammo today and everything shot 1.5 MOA or better.
