just like the poll asks. I've got some cash right now, and I want another non-commie rifle. I'd love to get a Garand to go along with my 91/30 and my M44. with the money I'd save, I could probably pick up a Mauser, too. I'd also like to get a full-fledged EBR during the (I believe) short window of opportunity between the sunset of the AWB, and the likely more-restrictive renewal that I think will come next year.

the cheap way out here would be to "evil-ify" my AK, and buy the Garand to satiate my sense of history. but I'd like some opinions.

Get the Garand. Despite what so many folks say about ARs, I'd have to say the Garand is the superior weapon.

Set aside some funds for an AR stripped lower, however, in case sKerry gets into office.

yeah, if I get the Garand, I plan on doing that. I'll eventually have both of them, anyway. and an AR is much easier to build yourself than a Garand. :neener:

They will still be building ARs long after the CMP runs out of M1s

I like Garands and will get one from the CMP.

I've already got an AR.

But here's a flip-side arguments.

How many times in your life will you get the chance to go on a major assault weapons bender on the day after the awful assault weapons ban sunsets after 10 long years?

CMP will have Garands for a bit longer.

But this will be a once-in-a-lifetime chance (at least I hope it is) to celebrate the death of an awful law with all kinds of politically-incorrect purchases.

I've almost bought from CMP twice in the past six months, but keep holding out for Sept.

Go for the M-1. ARs are a dime-a-dozen and are being cranked out left and right by everyone with a little mechanical know-how, but nobody is making Garands anymore. You'll (hopefully) always be able to snag an AR or two from someone for the foreseeable future.

Buy the AR first. There's no chance of a law banning the possession of a rifle the government is still selling directly to the citizens.

Get the Garand while you can there is only X number of them, While there are XXXXXX number of the AR's

BAM, BAM, BAM, BAM, BAM, BAM, BAM, BAM PING

Everyone keeps talking about buying the AR after September....heck, you can buy a pre-ban now...if you wanted to. Even if you wait until the day after the AWB sunsets, the prices aren't going to instantly fall. It'll happen over time as production of full-featured AR's ramps up. You may at that time, however, get a good deal on a post-ban AR as folks who want collapsible stocks, flash supressors and b. lugs start thumbing their noses at post-ban AR's sitting on gun store shelves.

Your question is really kind of interesting because I don't think even CMP knows how many "nice" Garands are left in inventory. And none of us can predict what will really happen with the AWB.

Another thing to consider and then I'll shut up. Prices of all AR's are beginning to move downward some, so if you do some serious shopping, there won't be much difference between an AR (post-ban) and a CMP Garand right now.
