HELP Please - YES, I have searched... 337PD vs. 637

From an Autoloader dipping his toe in the Wheelgun World... YES, I have searched this forum and did not find what I was seeking...

I am looking for comparative information on the S&W 337PD and the S&W 637... For CCW, and for Training purposes...

How are they alike , how are the different?

Are they both lightweight? Are they both +P rated?

Are they both J-Frame?


And finally - Which would YOU purchase today and WHY?


YES, I am a Wheelgun Newbie - I am looking to become educated!

Basically they are the same mechanically. Depending on what series of M637 they could be built on the same frame (today there is a J-Magnum frame). The M637 has a SS cylinder and barrel on an aluminum frame. The M337 has a Ti cylinder and shrouded barrel on an aluminum frame. I think the M337PD was made in a darker finish. Both are lightweight with the M337 being a bit lighter (I think). Both are +P rated if the M637 is a -1 series (built on the J-Magnum frame). As I'm no fan of the J-frames, especially the featherweight ones, I'll leave the recommendations to other posters.

My take: I have a 642 which is the 637 with the totaly enclosed hammer.

I like my 642 and carry it on an almost daily basis. Its light and best of all its hammerless and does not snag when drawn. If you are going to CCW with it that is a really important feature. Any of these guns are belly guns for up close work, if you need them they are going to be fired double action.

The couple ounces lighter weight of the TI cylinder vs the satinless steel cylinder, is a non issue when carring the gun, but it may be a longterm relaibility issue since the Ti can errode if the finish gets scraped off.

The recoil with .38spl +p is unpleasant but manageable. .357 out of such a lightweight gun is extremely unpleasant, so most will carry .38+p anyway.

I would also look at a 642 for concealed carry especially if its pocket carry you are considering.
The 337 is not worth the extra money IMHO.

There is a M337PD though out of production now.
He was looking to compare two very similar revolvers just made of different materials. Why introduce something else just because you like it better?

I have the 337PD, about 10.7 ounces and +P jacketed rating. I love the black frame and grey cyl. makes IMHO a good looking gun. Shooting +P will smack your hand pretty good because of the light weight but I think it is fun. Jim.
