I have a box of Remington Golden Sabers 230gr in .45(bullets only). I would like to duplicate the factory round(non +p) as close as I can with W231. My main concern is how they will feed in my 1911. Does anyone else use G.S.s over W231? How much W231 do you use?

Could some who has a box of factory G.S.s(230gr non +p) please measure a couple and tell me what the factory OAL is?

Thanks

I have recently laoded Golden Sabres in 3 of my Springfields, the following method of seating depth worked for me since I had no reference to start with either.
Start by seating the bullets long and continue to reduce the OAL until they just fit the magazine and seat in the chamber, allowng complete closure of the slide and upon extracting a loaded round be sure they easially clear the ejection port, I seat mine .010 deeper from this point and never had a FTF or jam in over 600 rnds., 200 per gun.

You have a 230 grain jacketed load using 231 worked up now? If so, use it. It's the bullet weight that's important. Not who made it. Otherwise, you'll have to work up the load. Hodgdon gives 4.2 to 5.3 of 231 for a 230 grain jacketed bullet.
The max OAL for the .45 is 1.275". Use that. It works with any 230 grain bullet.

1.275 is a bit long for a hollow point....you better back them up to about 1.23 or so.

FWIW, I got 776 fps from 230 grain Golden Sabres out of my 4.25 in ch barrel...that translates to about 850 fps from a 5 inch barrel...that said...W231 is a bit too fast burning to safely reach those speeds.

I recommend Power Pistol for powder...unless you want to get into +P pressure...because a maximum standard pressure load of 5.7 grains of W231 might get you just over 800 fps from a 5 inch barrel.

Factory 230gr Golden Sabers measured 1.235" in the rounds I measured. I agree with the above that it will take maximum charges of 231 to reach near factory velocity. I've loaded them with Unique and AA#5 and it still takes near max charges for 230gr bullets to reach factory velocity but the GS's don't seem to create as much pressure as regular bullets in my unscientific opinion. No need to push the limit trying to get another 50fps. The GS's shoot well in my Glocks and Colts.

Yep, 1.235 + or - a couple of thousandths.

+ 1 for AA #5, but WSF and True Blue will work well too.

I used a COL of 1.265" and it feeds great thru my S&W M&P full sized. I used Power Pistol 6.9 gr. and clocked and average 840 fps. YMMV, work up to it as the load manuals say.

I use W231 and Power Pistol for my .45 ACP rounds.

Power Pistol has flash, so may not be best substitute for a personal defense round. But it can definitely provide the velocity. PP can be used in .45 +P, .45 Super and 460 Rowland loads. It meters pretty easy.

W231 has lower flash, and meters easy. I get 850fps with some of my loads, but W231 and 45 ACP and 230gr is better 800fps or below. I think 5.3gr of W231, which is max load in some books, gives about 800fps in my 5in 1911.

I bought some 185gr +P Golden Sabres. Hope to shoot them this weekend. First time to shoot anything under 230gr. ROFL.

Didn't see velocity info on Remington website. Dang it. I figure 800-850fps for 230gr, and 900-950fps for +P 230gr. I think the Hornady 230gr +P are 950fps.

Remington Catalog says for 185 gr. GS standard load---1015fps at the muzzle and for +P 185 GS's--1140fps. That is listed for a 5" barrel.
230 GS's are listed with a velocity of 875fps also in a 5" barrel. Doesn't list +P 230's.

6.3grs of Unique lit off by a Rem 2-1/2 large pistol primer will send the 230gr GS out of my Colt 1991-A1 Gov model at 863 fps.

7.7grs of Unique puts the 185gr out the muzzle at 1,092fps. Both these loads can be grown a bit.

5.5grs of W231 sends a 230gr Remington FMJ down range at 795 fps. It is a very consistent load that has a standard deviation of just over 6 fps but doesn't get the velocity of Unique.

AA No.5 is THE powder I use in 45 ACP with this bullet. 8.2gr. gives me 850 FPS from my full size Kimber.

Good luck with W231. Let us know how it works for you.

I made 50rnds with 5.3gr of W231

That is going to be mild. :)

8.5 grs of AA #5 & a 230 Gr Zero JHP will get you 850+ from a 4" 1911.

I got a chance to try them. They all feed great. They did need seem a bit mild. maybe I should invest in a lb. of aa #5 next time. The only reason I have the w231 is to save money buy buying one powder that would work in .45, .38 special, and 9mm, but I shoot about 3 times as much .45 as the other 2 combined, so i guess getting a ".45" powder would be worth it, I also shoot a lot of Rainier RN 230gr, would you also recommend AA#5 for those too?

So will AA #5. ;)

WSF is another real good one for all three as well.

It will work great, as will WSF.

Nothing wrong with W231. It does just fine for all three. Just not my first choice for all three. It is for many though.
