I have a chance for a stainless steel Model 639 for $400 (Local FTF purchase), but I'm not familiar with this specific model. Per the seller: S&W model 639 9mm in good condition. Comes with the one magazine. Has some scratches but is very clean with a low round count. Serial number A793176

It seems like a good price from the "Buy it nows" online. But, is there anything I should be wary of or specifically check for? I know it originally came with 2 mags and was discontinued in 1988. Any advice would be appreciated.

He is about spot on and they are more reliable and last longer than the earlier 39 & 39-2 versions.

I would offer $350-$375 cash since it doesn't have spare magazine

Three digit S&Ws are gen lll guns with improvements that added value to the guns.

I think 3 digits are the 2nd Gen. I'm no S&W expert, so I'm sure I'll get this wrong, but I think it's

39 - 1st Generation
639 - 2nd Generation
3906 - 3rd Generation

That is correct, the 3 digit model number makes it a Gen 2. The "6" means it has a stainless slide and frame , so it will be heavier than a M-39 which has an alloy frame (Gen 2 is the 439 and Gen 3 is the 3904).

Every M-39 I've ever come across has originally come with 2 magazines. I would think for $400, you should also be getting the original box, all papers and tools

The 2nd and 3rd Gen. autos from S&W were some of the best all metal pistols they ever produced. The asking price of $400 seems a little high for just the gun and no spare mag or box. I would do as Onmillo suggested and go in at $350 and maybe meet in the middle if need be.
