2. I would like to address some concerns. I am not trying to rain on your parade, and if it's the firearm you would like to buy, go for it. But why are you looking for a first revolver that's expensive and hard to find? There is such a great selection out there, and most at a more reasonable price to meet your budget.
That being said, I hope you can find what you are looking for.

If you don't mind the lock there are always some for sale...as rcmodel has pointed out.
4" pre-lock 617 prices are going through the roof (and so are the 6"). The original no dash 617s with Combat grips are really tough to find and won't be cheap.

In terms of price the old saying says -"One get's what one pays for".
Diamonds and coal are both carbon but with one measured my the 100mg (carat) and the other by the ton.
If you want higher quality goods gthen you have to up the $. If you want lesser quality then get another brand.
I have always found www. sportingarms.com to offer very competitive prices.

They're hard to find because they sell well, so they're priced right where they ought to be, since it's what the market will bear. Sticker-shock is another matter.
FWIW, my 4" 10-shot 617 wasn't cheap when I bought it new, but it's been my most-shot gun, and in hindsight, one of my wiser gun purchases.
I usually go to Bud's first, then start comparing from there.

I bought a 6 " 10 shot 617 and was so impressed with it I decided it would belong to my grandson some day. Now I have to buy two more and it is worth the money.

In my opinion, quality is important whether it's your first or last firearm purchased. Good guns are a lifetime investment. The S&W 617 is an excellent revolver that will give you years of enjoyment. I have both a 4" and 6" model 617 and shoot them on a regular basis. I personally prefer the 6" but everybody has their own preferences.

Also consider that in the past 10 years, S&W wheelguns have gone up at least $200 in price on every model K frame and larger. If you get one and decide down the road you don't like it...you can probably recoup your initial investment fairly easily. As said earlier, you get what you pay for.

Looks like there was a great deal on a 4" posted on this site just a few days ago. It was less than half the usual price they fetch...sure wish i had seen the ad first.

Don't forget, a 4" 617 has the same SS frame, sights, and lockwork as a 4" 67, etc. The machining time is greater - the 617 has ten holes in it's cylinder. Just because it fires far cheaper ammo is no reason to think it should be a cheaper revolver - wishfull thinking, perhaps!
I will have had my 4" 617, bought new, for five years this autumn. Sure, it was expensive - little over a C-note more had bought my super buy several months earlier - a 4" 627 Pro. That is a deal of an 8-shooter .357 Magnum. But - if only one could stay - between the two 4"-ers, the 617 & 627 Pro - I'd keep the 617. I have a serious regret re my 617 purchas... why did I wait so long??

Numerous threads here about .22 revolvers keep coming to the same conclusion. I assume that the OP has read some of those threads and decided to jump in and get the gun that will do what he wants despite the cost.

Even when some lowlife removes the original Combat grips (to sell for more money on the side) from a "NIB" 617 no dash, the bidding can get near $700.

What about Ruger revolvers? Everyone always talks about S&W, but I've heard a lot of good things about Ruger. I have an SP101, .357 5 shot and love it. It's made of solid steel and is very accurate. I know it's not the type of revolver you're talking about, but I'm sure they have something comparable. Just my .02.

Ruger has a 8 shot SP101 with adjustable sights. 4" only.

sure Ruger makes a nice gun, I like 'em
in an off-the-shelf SA, the Single Six is the best value in the marketplace, IMO
but in a non-custom target grade rimfire DA revolver with a good out-of-box trigger, S&W hasn't had any real competition in too many years now
prices... yo, I have been watching prices go up on industrial machinery at least 40% in just the last six years, and stuff like wire & cable prices double in one year. If you cannot handle it (easily understood), do whatever else you have to, but if you can handle it, jump on it

I love my 617 4" 10 shot. The loading block and speed loaders are a blast.
