Here's the situation with my S&W 686. I took off those crappy stock grips and replaced with nice looking wood grips. The problem with that is, I reload using pretty serious powder (H110). Right now, I have a major calous on my hand due to the recoil. Can someone recommend a set of comfortable rubber grips for my 686?

Thanks!

I believe the hogue X-frame grips will fit every modern S&W frame with the exception of the J frame. You can find them on the S&W website. Word is they will turn that beast into a pussycat.

If you want rubber grips I like the Uncle Mike's Round Square Conversion grips available for $27.95 from S&W. They come stock on the M619 unlike the M620 which comes stock with Hogue grips.

If you want to buy wood grips that really work well to tame the recoil I highly recommend the grips made by Badger Custom Grips. I have them on both my M642 and M640 .357 Magnum. Even when firing full power Magnum rounds in the M640 they work very well!

I picked up the Hogue grips for my 686-3. They are a wee bit small for my mitts, but they meld with your hands so nicely. They took so much out of the recoil that I went with a 44mag. Good grips though, I preferred them to the Pachmeyers.

Do the wood grips fit your hand? I believe a properly fitting grip is more important than it's material. Maybe you need something that encloses the backstrap.

Like you I use H110/W296.

It's all about the fit of the grip. I personally believe that smooth wood is the best for hard kicking pistols. You DON'T want it to stick, you want it to be able to slip ever so slightly while still being firm in the grip.

Ahrends are good too, check them out.

I use a ridiculous amount of H110/W296 under a very heavy cast bullet, so the recoil I experience is at least equal to what you are observing and these Hogues are perfect IMO.

I threw away some Pachmayer Grippers that came with this pistol - couldn't stand the long and narrow feel of them. For others they are perfect.

Like I say, the grip is a personal thing and it must fit properly or you'll never be satisfied.

This is incorrect. The X frame grips will fit the N frame round butt guns only.

Regarding using heavy loads in the .357, no matter the composition of the grip, finding one that fits your hand well will go a long way toward helping with recoil. A friend and I were shooting some reloads yesterday involving amounts of 2400 that I will not list here. :D Having the custom-fit grips on my Model 27 made a world of difference in my ability to handle the recoil.

Unless S&W has some sort of universal adaptor in that little miracle grip, a N grip and a K grip have different dimensions.

I learned that one by trying, too.

I have not seen it 1st hand, but I did read an account of somebody using them on a scandium L frame.
It would not surprise me if the site info is wrong either. I've spoken to some real boneheads there.

i`m with snapping twig i let the hard kikers roll in my hand.
also if you ned to adjust ya hand it`s easier & faster to get your hand in a consistent grip.

Nothing beats the beauty of wood grips on a revolver. Keep the grips and get some cheap padded workout gloves.

+1 on the Ahrends grips:
