hey y'all.....i've already tried to search " best .22 rifle", etc. and came up with everything but. anyway, i'm thinking about a .22 rifle for general plinking, backyard target and ever popular survival/SHTF uses. i'm considering a 10-22, maybe stainless with synthetic stock. any suggestions and help much appreciated......m.r.

For a few dollars less, you can get a much more accurate and very dependable .22---The Marlin 60. You just can't do all kind of "cool" (and expensive) customzations to it like you can with a 10/22. But you don't need to...Put a half-way decent scope on it, and it'll probably spoot 1/2" groups at 50 yards. Total cost w/ scope, under $200.

Getting a 10/22 is a good excuse for playing with the parts list. I got one specifically to rebuild. I put in a Green Mountain barrel, Valquartsen trigger parts, and a Hogue plastic stock. I then put on a Weaver 2x7 rimfire scope. Shoots very nicely for not much money.

consider this...

I'm sure there're going to be some people telling you I'm wrong, but consider the AR-7 by AR-7 Industries. You can get one for under $200 set up as a survival rifle, throw a cheap sporter stock and bull barrel on it and have a decent plinker, and it has an integral scope base so you won't have to add one if you want to use a scope. Plus, right out of the box it will break down and fit in the floating stock, which makes a good pack/trunk rifle that won't take up too much space.

The next few posts will undoubtedly be people telling you it's a POS and jam-o-matic, but that hasn't been my experience with the ones made by AR-7 Industries (stay away from Charter Arms and Henry versions). Mine never jams (has to have hi velocity .22LR ammo like CCI Blazer or Remington Lightning for $1.00 a box) and I can take the scope off and put it back on without losing my zero. It's pretty accurate too.

Check out these options for it:

You can buy a Marlin 60, blued w/ cheap 4x scope already mounted at Dicks for $119. It'll serve you and your kids and their kids well.

If you want the best 22 rifle with the most reasonable cost for the quality you get then look no further than a CZ 452. This is only my humble opinion though:)

Yeah, but its well worth putting a better scope on...Mine came with the above, but I quickly swapped it out for a Tasco Pronghorn ($40 in sale) 3-9x, and its a beautiful thing...Downright hilarious at the range, when I'm shooting next to a guy with a 10/22, even a heavily modified one, and I'm shooting 10 shot groups you can cover with a dime.

P.S. If you wanna spend some more money, the CZs seem to be awesome guns (no personal experience), haven't heard anything bad about them yet...I'm just very happy with my Marlin.

You might also consider the CZ-452 Trainer, available at Wal-Mart for $221.23

CZ 452 ZKM

Preferably one before the "A" prefix. They're the greatest .22's for the money ever made. They make the other .22's look and feel like toys. The familar "twap" from the long barrel of my CZ has signaled doom to small game hundreds of times over. The results speak for themselves

Add me as another vot for a Marlin 60 with a good scope. Unless, you do want to spend a lot of money on aftermarket parts. I spent $175 total for mine with a decent 4x scope. As others have said, you will be more accurate than many people with a customized 10/22.

That being said, my next 22 rifle purchase will be a 10/22. I want to be able to heavily modify my next 22 rifle and make it into something unique that I can call my own.

many thanks one and all. i just got in from work and was happy to see the volume and quality of responses. after digging around on gunsamerica.com to get a feel for things, i think the marlin 60, stainless/synthetic may be the ticket. thanks again.....m.r.

Ah yes the marlin 60. I remember putting a couple thousand rounds thru my dads as a kid. Not cleaning it . And having it finally decide to start jamming. As for the 10/22 after a few hundred rounds or so the magazine would get so much fouling in it you'd have to take it apart, lose the spring, spend at least a few minutes looking for it, clean everything, figure out how to put it back together, and then start shooting again. So i'll vote for the marlin 60 or on of the TC's if you want an auto. And either a savage or a CZ if you want a bolt.

Remington

If you can, find yourself a used Remington Bolt Action 510, 511, 512, 513 or 514 and you will be a very happy shooter with a very nice rifle at what can be a very nice price. Too bad they don't make them anymore...

well i totally agree with the mod 60. here is mine and what it can do with at least 5 diff brands of ammo. it is totally sick. Atop is a Barska 6.24.42 i got at Gander mountain for 70 dollars.
now for the back yard, you can single load the mod 60 with Colibris, super colibris, cb shorts, or cb longs, but it is a pain. Get the mod 60 used at a pawn shop for 50 to 70 dollars. then go get a bran new marlin bolt action 981 for 150 dollars. they are tube fed also , and will hold 25 shorts at one time! that is awesome. her is a couple of picks of my 81 series, made in 1937, and the new ones are just as accurate.
