Help with my 6mm loads and 550b

I had been using extruded powder with my reload for my 6mm Remington but cannot use them with my new 550b Dillon press. They recommend ball powder for small necked cartridges. I also will be eventually reloading .223 for my AR15. I need something that flows well through the powder thrower.

Might want to check out Ramshot powders... fine spherical (ball) powders that are supposed to be reasonably temperature stable. Tac is a little faster than Varget, Big Game is a little slower perhaps than RE-15, and Hunter is supposed to be right in there w/ H4350 and thereabouts. If you need slower than that, Ramshot Magnum is also available, but I'm not sure where it falls in the scheme of things exactly.

One of my Hornady guides lists loads for the 6mm Remington using Winchester 760. That meters well. For .223 I usually use Winchester 748, another ball powder that meters well.

I use Varget (stick powder) with a 550B in .223. Throws +/- .1 Try it before you change to something else if you're happy with the powder.

If I knew how to post pix, I'd show you the groups I shot with my Bushmaster last week-end. Two back to back 1/2" groups at 125 yards prone. 55 Nosler BT's, 26.0 Varget. Fed Match primers. Win cases

I got tired of the powder drop on my 550B and bought a Lyman 1200 DPS to dispence the powder for my 6MM.

So my forst operation is neck-size, deprime, reprime, then set them in a loading block, then charge powder with the Digital Powder System, then bullet seating and crimping with the 550B.

The powder drops that came with the 550B just were not accurate at all.
Of ten throws two of them would be right.:banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

I was using IMR, Accurate, and Hodgdon powders.
Using the Lyman DPS, I just punch in the charge I want press enter and the machine dispences the proper charge and away I go.

Thanks for the info and ideas. I did have great accuracy with the powder thrower using Power Postol in for my .45 ACP. So I will try some new powders befor I invest more in another powder measuring method.

If you try your favorite powder, and it does not work well with the 550 measure, you might try using a different style PM on your dillon press. Both Hornady and RCBS offer case activated linkages for their PMs that thread into a std die location. But they currently do not expand the casemouth in the same step (not a problem for rifle dies anyway). Hornady has announced a new case activated linkage that will also expand the casemouth.

Drum type measures (like redding, rcbs, hornady) fill/empty from the ends of the cavity, which seems to work better than the dillon measure, which fills/empties from the side, on stick type powders. However, even they do not meter stick powder as well as ball/flake powder, but they might work good enough for your powder/application.

Another option is the JDS quickmeasure, which is supposed to work well with stick powders.

I haven't gotten any to try it yet, but in my reasearch it looks that Varget may be a great all purpose powder for the rifle loads I will be doing (.223, 6mm Rem, 30-06) can get some nice velocities out of this according to the Hornady book and some good groups with both .223 and 6mm. Getting the tightest groups with my 30-06 is not a crucial to me as I use it for big game here in Colorado and am not going to be taking long shots on a small target. If that dosn't meater well I will just take my Dillon out to the range or not . I will look into the Hornady addition as I have a one of their powder throwers, though it to has some issues with the stick powders, (H4350) but I love the ease of switching the powder meaters out on it. Something for Dillon to do some R & D on.
