Help with S&W s/n, please.

I need some advice on a S&W 686-4 serial number. I don't see it on the yoke but "MOD 686-4" is there but no s/n. The s/n is on the butt. From what I've researched it is supposed to be both places, right? Has this gun been "tampered" with? Is it an illegal gun?

As long as the # is on the firearm it is legal. There is no set place as you can see by all the different locations that the different manufactures use.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking that. I just wanted to make sure. Does it matter the the handle covers it?

No, that doesn't matter. The penalties (and they are nasty) kick in for "altering" or "obliterating" (removing) the s/n that is on the frame. Covering it with a grip for better function doesn't do either of those.
