Can anyone recommend someone that does good work repairing wood stocks? To make a long story short, I was deer hunting 3 days ago and had my rifle slung over my shoulder. The sling broke and when the butt of the stock hit the ground, the stock split in several places. Don't know if the walnut had a weak spot in it or not, but at this point that is irrelevant. BTW, the gun is a left handed Model 70 Featherweight in .270 WSM. I LOVE this gun and want it fixed. According the the Winchester online catalog, I can buy a new walnut stock from them for $357. I could not locate anyone who makes a synthetic stock for this particular version, LH being the one that is always missing. Any help would be appreciated.

check with custom stock makers to see what they will charge you to make an inletted unfinished stock, finishing a stock is easier than repairing, and I think that $357 is a little steep for a factory stock

DIY! I have gone to gun shows where they were selling perfectley good Winchester 1200's, and rifles like a Remington 700 for way cheap, just because the stock was cracked. I bought a really pretty nice Winchester 1200 just about a month ago for $75, and the stock had a few large splits. I took the stock and buttplate off and examined what I had. First I got some gorilla glue (the stuff works wonders!) and a couple of syringes with the needle. Get to the cracks closest to the edge of the stock and open the crack just enough to drizzle some water into. Then take the syringe and fill it with the gorilla glue and squirt a good amount into the split. Do this for all of the cracks then clamp to dry for a day or so. Just make sure you leave it clamped long enough to dry properly because the glue expands when reacting with the damp wood. When it is done drying, if you happen to have some oozing out, scrape it off with a sharp knife, and if desired sand done and refinish completely! I have so far done this with 2 rifles and it has worked great!

MacMillan stocks has what you want:

WINCHESTER FEATHERWEIGHT

Winchester Featherweight was the stock used by USRAC on the Winlite Featherweight rifles. This stock has a straight comb and no cheekpiece, thin pistol grip, and thin schnabel forend. It can be used for either long or short actions as well as featherweight or sporter barrel contour. Not available with checkering. Will accept up to a #3 contour. Available in right and left hand.

Okay,
I think I have found one that may help you. Its a boyd's laminate but it is actually a really good deal. If you would like I can buy it, finish it, and then send it to you or you can just buy it and finish it yourself. I have finished about 30 stocks and I sell them online. I would do it for $185 plus shipping. Here is the link to a picture of the stock.

I can finish the stock for you but as the description says, it may require some fitting and sanding to get the action to fit in it. I have a model 70 but it is a long action so I can't fit it to a short action. It may be worth it for you to finish the stock yourself since it may require some work even after I finish it.

Here is a picture of some of the stocks I am working on at this very moment.

If you want to see if you can repair the original or even do a custom stock from blanks, this guy is a true master craftsman with reasonable rates. The website below has many examples of his work. He did a Savage 99 stock for me that is absolutely gorgeous. I recommended to a friend and he did another great job on a stock repair for him, too. Can;t say enough good things. Good luck with your rifle.

Found a Stock

After hours of searching the net, I ran across a family owned company in Kentucky. I checked their catalog and a LH stock was not listed. I sent them an email to have them check, and within 2 hours received an email back stating they had one in stock. It was a NEW walnut factory stock for my LH Featherweight. The best part of all was the price: $120 plus $11 shipping. I immediately called them and ordered the stock. It was the only LH on they had. For others trying to locate a stock or parts for their firearms, you might want to give them a try:

You can't order online, they insist on talking to their customers. I find that refreshing. They were very friendly and helpful on the phone.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions. I have bookmarked them for future reference.

:)
