I do most of my handgun shooting at 7-9 yards, and although I certainly don't keep all shots in a ragged hole I tend to keep them in a pretty decent group center of mass.

Yesterday I went to shoot for a concealed carry class, and I did fine from 3 and 7 yards, starting at low ready and having 2 secind to fire on a command.

At 15 yards my shots ended up in a nice little group, except it was about 7 inches low and and 6 inches to the left of my grouping from the closer distances.

I found one of those handy charts that tells you what you are doing wrong, and it says that I'm "tightening my fingers". Does anyone know which fingers (on which hand) this would be refering to?

Also, am I probably doing this all the time, and it only shows up on the target at longer distances? Or am I probably doing something different to compensate at the longer distance?

I know this is probably a difficult question to answer based on my description, but I figure someone here might have had the same problem.

I believe it refers to the right hand. Increasing the torque from your right hand will drive the shots left.

For those long distance shots your probably gripping the gun more.

If your are shooting right handed, low and left can also be your trigger pull.

Either too much finger on the trigger or anticipating the recoil (flinch)

Time and pressure also don't help. When you are relaxed at the range, you take your time and do everything right. Under the pressure of a timed drill (for your CCW) you may be tightening up and jerking the trigger.

Distance only makes the problem worse.

I don't think you mentioned the platform but - IMo - if folks put weak hand forefinger around front of trigger guard, this will easily pull shots, usually toward weak side. I favor keeping weak forefinger under trigger guard.

Just another thought for you.

It was a 1911, index finger of my left hand comes up and hits the bottom of the trigger guard. I'm going to try to get to the range on Monday to see if loosening the right hand fingers helps.

thanks all for the suggestions.

I was told on the S&W forum that I was an "inexperinced shooter" because I shoot low and left with some guns
