been a while since i was on but have had slot happen last thursday someone broke into my truck and stole a gun in the super walmart parking lot the police have the serial number of the gun and the licese palte of the people who took it even a witness who chassed them to saldo a town jsut a few minutes away but they have not calledm e back am i everr going to see it again?

With all that info I would think finding the thieves wouldn't be too much of a problem. How long it will take to get your gun back I couldn't guess.

I assume it was legal to have the gun in the truck where you live?

yes here in texas on a gun rack is legal but the cops were supoosed to call me on friday and still no word. i called in and they said he would call me today but still nothing they told me there were cases ahead of me and every second that gun is out there it is farther and farther away. and less chance of finding it on the good side one stolen gun leaves me the right to buy a new one or mabee two got them yesterday would still like me old one back
though.....

Since it is stolen property, and you are the rightful owner, you should expect to see it back. If you don't, a lawsuit is in order.

As for when... As it is stolen property, it is also evidence. The police will likely find fingerprints, fibers, stray hairs and the like on the firearm, any of which can be used in the trial of the thief. So, it may not come back to you until after the trial is done. If the thief is convicted and then appeals, it may be even longer. It all depends on just how the judicial process goes.

And yes, it was probably legal. Belton and Salado are towns in central Texas, so gun + truck + parking lot doesn't indicate any kind of crime.

thanx i want to go find the people my self i have the license palte number but have been very unlucky as far as seeing the car that they were driving i am jsut hoping they didnt decide to make a trip to mexico with it

(i sold my old marlin model 60 to a friend who had it at the flea market and promply sold it for 120 dollars. way over the asking price jsut so they could take it to mexico and leave it. since they are illegal in mexico) if that happened it will never be seen by my eyes again
on the upside i had the serial number on me so if anyone sales it it will come up stolen so i might see it again one day in the future

What they do with it between now and when the police get around to them is out of your control. Now that you have notified the authorities that the gun has been stolen, you absolutely do NOT want to "go find the people [your]self." Doing that would be extremely stupid.

yes here in texas on a gun rack is legal

I still don't understand why anyone would want to advertise a gun in the open like that.

Not saying you brought it upon yourself, just that having a gun out in the open isn't exactly a good thing.

Theft in itself is wrong and I hope they catch the perps. Also, best wishes to a quick recovery of your item.

i was told when i first started carrying my gunswith me that if i put it behind the seat that i was concealing it so the gun rack was a natural option i eve ntold the cop and he didnt tell me if i could leave it behind the seat or not so i wasdoing as told basiclly

Er... I'm fairly certain that behind the seat is just fine for a long gun. IIRC, behind the last seat of a pickup is legally identical to the trunk of a car (not considered the "passenger compartment"). I may be thinking of another state, but I'm about 95% on this.

How about unloaded in a rifle case?

Maybe it's just me but I won't ride with a rifle in the rear window for all to see. I like to be a bit more discrete. Must be a Tucson thing. ;)

In Texas you can carry a rifle or shotgun in your vehicle, loaded or unloaded, cased or uncased, open or concealed. It's a really good idea to keep it out of sight so it doesn't get stolen though.

well good news the cops called me yesterday at 500 to take a statment i went to the policew station and they found the guy that did it. the investegator got the casse mnday morning and solved it in one day!:what:
unforunitly the guy that stole it out of my truck was my cousin :banghead: so i am still pressing charges against him he is kinda a drug headhe would have sold it for drug money anyway so it is best mabee so time in county jail will get him clean:evil: any way i am glad i still have to wait until after the court date to get my gun backk and i checked on the law in texas you CAN put a long gun behind the seat or anywhere in the vehicle. "god i love texas" no one else needs to come though because texas stinks really bad lol

Glad to hear you got it back.

Now maybe they can find the guy who stole your commas. :D
