I need help decideing what rifle i should bye. I am leaning twoards a remington 700 sps tactical for shooting 100-500 yards. I dont have very much money because im very young. I have a rem 700 sps ss 7mm mag but i use it for hunting. I also need help with what i should top it off with.

i want a nice varible scope, and somthing with a shorter bbl. i hate luggin around my 7mm bc it has a 26'

A .223 handi-rifle might not be a bad choice. They are relatively cheap, and from when I've
shot them, i thought theu were very accurate. Im also very young.

What caliber are you considering? .223 or .308? I've owned the SPS Tactical in both calibers. Although I do prefer the action to others, I really don't think that I'll ever buy another off the shelf Remington, unless I get it cheap to be used as an action donor.

My experience with the Remington .308 was that it was a very accurate rifle. I've shot and posted several .2 and .3" groups that were shot with this rifle. Still, the bore was rough and I had a problem with copper fouling after 40 or 50 rounds, so I had to clean often. The chamber was also cut on the large side. The throat was long and the chamber wide. What this meant to me was that I was getting less velocity than I could have and brass wasn't lasting long. What I wound up doing with the rifle left me with little more than the receiver and bolt being used, with all other parts being aftermarket.

With the .223, I found it to be very accurate as well, but it had a quirk that drove me crazy. I couldn't just drop a round into the port and close the bolt. When single loading, I had to load the round into the magazine and let the bolt strip the round from the mag for it to chamber right. Other than that, it was a fine rifle.

Quite frankly, if I were tooking for a budget rifle with a good upgrade path, I'd be looking at a Stevens 200.

First off i am only 14. Guns are my pride and joy. And dont judge because i do know allot. I read and work on my guns for hours a day. I am just now learning to shoot 300 yards. And i know from expierience that 300 yds is right in a good range for a .308. And i know that with the speed a .223 has it can take me there too. But its not a very comftorble range for it. So i am going with the .308. I just want to know if this rifle is a good choice. So would this rufle be good with shooting distances?

The SPS will be a good gun. You would want something that has a ballistic reticle if you are going out to 500. Maybe a nikon monarch with BDC? If you go beyond that (the rifle is capable if you are) you would want target turrets on the scope. Maybe a bushnell elite 4200 or 6500 would do. Let us know what you decide.

A .223 will do you just fine at 300 yards out of a good bolt action and it won't beat you up. Ammo is cheaper then .308 so you will be able to shoot more, the more you shoot the better you will get. I regularly kill coyotes out to 300 yards with a Mini 14 and the Mini is not a super accurate rifle. Look at the Savage line of rifles in .223.

The scope i was looking at is a nikon 4200. It seems very nice. And i might take this

A good .223 will make you a better shooter just because you will get more bang for the buck. Ammo is less than half of the price of .308 for practice ammo.

I would suggest the savage Axis, available in .223 and .308 for under $300.
Put some good glass on it- I would suggest the new Redfield series, and you can have a rifle that is more accurate than most folks can shoot for under $500.

Whatever you do...don't forget a good bolt action .22. Buy some scaled down steel targets and work on shooting skills for pennies a shot.

I have about 600 to spend on the rifle and 600 for a scope. And i also reload .308,7mm,30-06,9mm,30-30,44, .223, and 38 special. But still ur right the round is a litlle cheaper just because the powder. But i use 40-64 mainly and i have alot. I also shoot .223 alllllll the time. Its also a rem 700 but its a adl.

So you're 14 years old, you reload for eight different cartridges, you already have a 700ADL and a 700SPS, and you have a total of $1,200 to spend on another rifle and want our opinion?

Here is my opinion:

Lots and lots of rifle cartridges will take you out to 500+ yards. The Recoil of a 308 isn't much less than a 7mm Mag or 30-06 for identical bullet weights - only a few pounds of force. If the recoil from your 7mm mag is too much for you to shoot then you probably won't get much relief from a 308. You are still talking about 15+ pounds of recoil Vs 20, and identical recoiling velocity. That's why most kids your age are shooting a .243 win, which generates around 9 pounds of recoil even with heavy weight bullets.

308 also isn't much different in its real world abilities or applications than the 7mm mag you already have. IMO you should be looking for something to fill the gap between your 223 and 7mm mag, which would again bring us to something like the 22-250 or the 243 winchester.

The recoil doesnt bother me. And me and my grandpa load the bullets. So its not just me. And i want a fun to shoot rifle with the cababilty to shoot distances.

Im just wondering if the 700 sps tactical is a auccurate and tough rifle. And if it isnt, the. what gun for 600 is?

the recoil isnt a priblem. im 5'10 170 ibs. i can handle a 7mm like a baby
I'm 6' 01" / 210 lbs and 7mag recoil is a problem for me. I typically shoot 300wm when shooting a magnum target rifle and the recoil of a 15 lb rifle gets to be a bit much in long shooting sessions. Putting a few rds down range is no problem, but 3 hours and 60 rds later, things change. Time behind the rifle is what will make you a better shooter so pick something you can shoot for extended periods.

Good Luck.

I have a rem 700 sps

I also shoot .223 alllllll the time. Its also a rem 700 but its a adl.

And me and my grandpa load the bullets.

Im just wondering if the 700 sps tactical is a auccurate and tough rifle.

Let me respectfully suggest that you had the answer to that question before you started this thread. If you are still unclear about the Remington's capabilities, then you should ask your grandpa about his rifles. I'm sure he is a knowledgeable fellow, and would be glad to help out his grandson.
