I'm starting to load for my new Henry Big Boy .45LC.
Anybody have any favorite loads that could get me started?
I need a load for targets and a load for deer/hogs.

I have the same gun and don't recall Henry having any statement about the gun having an extraordinary capability. You load by the book. It's a 45 Colt and within that spec I don't expect it is a deer rifle at any sort of range. You would expect that it should be good for at least tier 2 loads, say around 20k psi, but how does one really know that other than asking "hey, do any of you have a 45 Henry you haven't blown up yet? Whatcha shootin in it?

What reliable rule of thumb says a rifle is any different than a handgun in the same cartridge? Who says they would all comply with someone's rule or experience.

While not a Henry, my levergun loading started with handgun level loads. I watched closely as I worked up higher loads and never got to max. handgun levels. I figger that a rifle designed for a handgun cartridge will be safe with any safe handgun load. I'd suggest starting with a starting load and work up, if you feel it's necessary. My Puma in .44 Magnum is a decent 100+ yard deer rifle with mid-range handgun loads, much less than max level. A big bullet with a big flat nose works quite well...:D
