Henry sent me their Mare’s Leg for T&E review. This model is chambered for .22 Long Rifle, .22 Long and .22 Short cartridges.

The Mare’s Leg features a large loop lever, perfect for large hands or while wearing gloves.

The smooth American Walnut stock and forearm and richly blued barrel make for a very attractive firearm.

Out at the range temperature was 60° F. Variable winds 8 -12 mph. CCI and Federal ammunition was accumulated for the test.

All groups were 10 shots at 10 yards, standing.

5 rounds benched at 20 yards

There is a lot of fun plinking with a .22 rimfire and even more so with a lever action. It ate all the different lengths of .22 ammo tested with no malfunctions - 22 Short, Long and LR. It is kind of awkward to try and shoot; can’t really hold it like a handgun and the stock isn’t long enough to shoulder it like a rifle. I found that if I rested the buttstock against my check like you would do with a full length stock it does provide an ample amount of stability for a close range shot.

I wanted a centerfire model of that gun.

But after handling the Henry version I decided that I didnt need an anchor for a small boat.

Too bad they make it with the heaviest barrel and brass reciever that they could find.

Must weigh about 5 or 6 POUNDS.

The .22 version was cute but I was going to use the .45 LC model for handgun deer hunting.

NOT at the weight it comes in,I did speak to the company rep and he told me the reason and I cannot argue with company policy.

Too bad,now I have to find a Rossi that is in state alreary as they wont ship them to NYS with the required [ stupid ] fired case.

The Rossis' weigh in at 4.4lbs or so via their website. Personally I like the Henry lever design better. The Henry MSRP is $950

Let me get this straight.. You think a Mare's Leg is too heavy. YES, it is heavy. But then so is a 9.5" barrelled Ruger Redhawk, weighing in at 58 oz. or 3.6 pounds. Now as I remember the Mare's Leg has a 12" barrel.. it's just going to weigh more. The extra length of barrel, and a LARGER reciever it's just going to weigh more. Then again that style reciever is known to handle rifle loads.

So if you are scratching your head as to why it's heavier... Umm scratch your head as to why you thought it weigh as little as a revolver. Then again we are only talking less than a pound.

I own and carry a Ruger custom .44 mag. 4 3/4" in a El Paso chest rig.

It is HALF the weight of the Henry .45 LC as the 12" barrel is an octagon barrel and the brass frame is bulkier than a steel one.

If you get the chance to heft one,I am sure you will see the point I was making [ if your comments were at me ? ].

I am a HUGE fan of Steve McQueen and would have loved to own and shoot/carry a "mare's leg" or whatever the company want to call it.

I got to handle the [ insert name of brand, that I forgot ] and it was MUCH lighter in the same caliber.

btw,I did not purchase that one as it was 1200.00 dollars.

Scatty check the Rossi.

I would GLADLY.

BUT the NYS police have decided they are not going to do the NYS REQUIRED bullet saving shoot so as to have one round on file of all handguns in NYS.

At least not on the Rossi !!.

I had one ordered from a large local gun shop and after they got them in,they were refused the normal business courtesy of taking the guns to the NYSP and having them 'printed'.

So although they were in the state, they are NOT available to me.

Nothing like a real nanny state to make up laws as they come up.

I have the Henry 22.

And the Rossi .357.

Good guns.

It's interesting that three (senior) ladies I'm teaching handgun shooting all bought a Henry Mare's Leg (along with several other handguns).

Scaaty: Very sorry to hear that bro.

M2: Which loop lever is better in your opinion??
