Does anyone know what's the safe but unofficial pressure limit this rifle can take?
Some metallurgy guru said a Marlin 1895G can take up to 40,000 PSI.
The official word from the manufacturer is SAAMI standard, which is no more than 28,000 PSI.

Have a look at the two links posted below from the Garrett Cartridges of Texas site. They're quite thorough in their discussion of their ammunition loadings and the mechanical strength of the various lever-actions available. When you take a peek at the ammunition offerings, there's a Ballistics info button that will open the tech data for that round. In it are pressure quantities measured in "CUP" which can be close to a p.s.i. number.

(Disclaimer: I don't reload; I'm only relaying information that I have heretofore been mostly unfamiliar with, so if my post reads awkwardly, you'll know why.)

CHAMBER PRESSURE & THE MODERN 45-70 LEVER-GUN

Garrett Cartridges - .45-70 Products

Now, at between $4.00 and $7.50 per round, this isn't plinking ammo. But if I'm working or playing near grizzly, I'm going to have this stuff with me along with a good-quality lever gun.

Thank you for your post. It's always! fun to learn more about the right tools for the job at hand.

Hotter than standard trapdoor level 45/70 loads are the gun version of big lifted diesel bro dozer trucks.

It's fun to post on the internet that you shoot X load in the ubiquitous measuring contest 45/70 threads are destined to devolve into.

But the fact is there isn't a critter on the earth you can't kill or a target you can't hit with a trapdoor load vs marlin or ruger no1. With the sole exception being the survivability of your rotator cuff

The Henry is safe with the most potent factory loads and similar handloads. In addition, it is a wonderfully handy, very well made, and accurate firearm.
