First off I want to thank everyone for replying, all your answers (at least most) were very insightful. And as you have all been waiting for, the point of this thread:

Someone already pointed out my “forum background” so ill expand it a little. A big part of my family lives in the USA but I don’t, we moved a long time ago. I live in Costa Rica, Central America. Last year I purchased a weapon and since have been learning as much as I can about the most I can, that is weapon handling and defense techniques. To avoid complete and udder boredom ill continue with my fun story. Costa Rica’s president, Nobel Peace Prize winner, Oscar Arias is, as you can imagine, a flamboyant anti gun liberal. He has now thought of a new plan to disarm the whole of the Costa Rican population, by limiting the number of weapons for a citizen to have to the unbelievable amount of…..1. And beyond that he has set limits to handgun, rifle and shotgun caliber, for example all handguns must be .380 or smaller. This new law project, once in effect, will force everyone to hand in their then illegal weapons for them to be destroyed.

In the last 8 years the amount of killings in C.R. has increased in exponential amounts do to constant migration of peoples with very violent backgrounds (Colombia, Nicaragua ect), increase in poverty and a general discontent of the population. Muggers here are now using guerilla tactics (to call them something), in which they first shoot you and then ask whether you have money or not, using two cars to block highways while four men with automatic weapons (AK47 mostly) make you get out of your car and steal it.

I am trying to make a study on why it is that this happens, proving that disarming the people, leaving them defenseless to these disgusting meaningless criminals, is not going to stop the massacres in the streets. I feel that these criminals will start having a really bad time if they started having victims that defend themselves effectively. So I set out to present this study/thesis to the government to fight the passing of this heinous new law, I’ve talked to psychologists, sociologists and firearms experts, I also wanted to use personal interviews as another means to demonstrate my point, hence the post. I’m planning on offering as a solution stricter gun control as in background checks, border control ect. But NOT disarm the people. Make CC tests stricter, harder and involve more features procuring that people that pass are exceptionally responsible people and citizens.

The post was a trick question which a couple failed, this scenario has been lived by MANY costaricans, and most did B and were convicted for premeditated murder. Unbelievable for Americans because they have an efficient judicial system, but we don’t. its not uncommon to see a murder suspect go free after being detained a few hours, and it is VERY common to see vengeance crimes. Nonetheless the fact that all but a couple of the people who answered were senior members, and that they all answered the “non violent” and responsible way will be put into my study, as well as other statistics like the fact that Switzerland has the highest rate of guns to people but incredibly low rates of crimes related to guns or violent happenings involving guns.
Once again I’m greatly thankful for your help, Newbie222

I'm not even going to pretend any of this makes any sense.

Uh, good luck with your study, or something.

You aren't very familiar with the U.S. judicial system, are you? There are a lot of Americans who wind up in prison as a result of choosing plan B too.

And for the record, my choice would have been B, but I decided to be a smarta$$ instead.

Good luck. If things get really bad down there, move back here, just not to CA, MA, NJ, NY, ...

I lived in CR many years... 'till 2003, yeah, the crime situation there was getting progresively worse, but well crime was/is getting bad EVERYWHERE.

One thing about CR, when I first moved there... it was a VERY peaceful country, with very little crime, and it had very liberal concealed carry laws. This before Fla passed CCW and at a time when Miami was a "wild west" crime ridden city.

Nowadays, things have very much changed in Miami since CCW... as well as in Florida and also in the many states that now allow their law-abiding citizens to carry concealed weapons for protection.

You may want to make this fact (supported by data and documented numbers and statistics that are easily available) part of your study.

I was considering returning to CR after my "business" here at VAMC is finished, but in light of of recent political changes that are leading to laws that I am not in agreement with, and also by what you have mentioned here, have decided to remain in my country. A country where I am allowed -at present - to exercise a basic right all free men should have, a right allowing that I can protect self and family... I feel, sadly, that even here this may soon change.

I am well aware this situation CR is resultant - caused by - THE ILLEGAL AND UNCONTROLLED IMMIGRATION of "less than desirable" elements, in fact hardened criminals (e.g. Salvadoran gang members who have been deported from the US and have now made their way to CR...Colombian "sicarios" - hit men who murder for money in San Jose on an almost daily basis, so I hear - etc.) this situation is perhaps something for us here in America to ponder on

to griz

Your option B does not involve killing anybody. Did you mean option A?

my point was to explain what happens here, in CR most cases the burglars made their way into the house even after the victims turn light on/off or whatever...and they were armed. VERY armed

a very well knowned teacher here is completing a 20 or 30 year sentence. the SAME burglars had already tried to break in twice before into his house and he screamed them off...not before the men broke his window with a bottle full of sand and threw bricks....the third time the man had had enough, he waited for them to be IN the house and killed two men and wounded one....he was convicted for premeditated murder and agravated assault(i guess its called in USA)...he was 60+ when convicted

Seems to me that asking somebody if they have any money *after* you shoot them could prove to be problematic.
'Course, every once in awhile, I'm wrong.

Non-lethal shots are not too hard to make on disarmed targets.

Well, I guess I still don't understand what the point was, but good luck with your efforts.

To the original scenario, what difference does the ski mask make? If you already know they are going to shoot you or take your car, or some other Bad Thing I don't see why knowing what they looked like would keep me from shooting. But I may really be missing something, we don't have too much of that brand of terrorism here.

I think what really happened here is that this man had a lawyer that failed to defend him, if that was his testimony, and his lawyer let him say that in court.

Personally, I'd like to know *what country this took place in? And does the defendant (the 60 yr old man, in this case) get any real representation as, in a competent (qualified) defence Lawyer?

*Never mind, Costa Rica, trick question, etc., I think I understand.

Newbie222:

Come on guys...give the man a break. I see his point. He is living what we fear of Hillary and the Brady Bunch! We act on what we expect, per life experiences to constitute common sense (castle doctrine), then end up defending our very life twice: first against perps, and second against the prosecutor!

This is why Michiganders demanded legislated Castle Doctrine in 2006!!! It is what CR needs! Newbie222, sounds like your new government took a lesson from Brazil! The CR citizens too need to take a lesson from Brazilians citizens...take back your rights.

My advice to you, newbie222...pack your bags and get the hell out of CR while you're alive and in good health! Michigan's firearms laws are grounded in common sense.

Good luck and God bless!
