Make sure you pattern the gun at the ranges you will be using it (don't assume just because shell X shoots good in "Fred's" gun, it will shoot the same in yours)

Buy, read and re-read Bob Brister's book "Shotgunning: The art and the science". Read and understand what Brister is saying, then go out and shoot and come home and re-read the book.
Oh, and a second piece of advice, don't lend your only copy to anyone. If its a friend they'll tell you how good the book is and never give it back, if its a competitor they'll use the info in your book to beat you like a drum.
