Make sure you pattern the gun at the ranges you will be using it (don't assume just because shell X shoots good in "Fred's" gun, it will shoot the same in yours)

Zen

Be One with the Gun.

That was the first thought that came to mind when I "got into the groove" the first time. I'm still hoping to "own" that feeling...it's so elusive!

Most of all: Do it because you ENJOY it.

Good advice folks...

From personal experience another one.

"Don't bet against that 80 yr old man, with the bluing worn off his shotgun and the zipper plum wore out on his gun case".

Don't ask me how I know. :D

I got to be REAL good friends with him...and numerous others like along the way...heck, I still search these folks out.

My single piece of advice:

Buy, read and re-read Bob Brister's book "Shotgunning: The art and the science". Read and understand what Brister is saying, then go out and shoot and come home and re-read the book.

Oh, and a second piece of advice, don't lend your only copy to anyone. If its a friend they'll tell you how good the book is and never give it back, if its a competitor they'll use the info in your book to beat you like a drum. ;)

When you flush a rooster up by stepping on it, it's ok to let it get more than 3 yards away before blasting it.
