June 10, 2003 -- A Navy veteran who shot a burglar as the crook crept into his toddler's bedroom has dodged a possible three- month prison sentence for criminal possession of a weapon by coming clean with prosecutors.
Ronald Dixon, 27, flashed a broad grin yes terday after pleading guilty to a reduced charge of disorderly conduct, a violation that will send him to Rikers Island for just three days, in a deal with Brooklyn DA Charles Hynes.

"I'm very pleased with the DA's office and its decision," Dixon told reporters.

Authorities have always held that Dixon, a Carnegie Hall computer engineer, was within his rights in shooting a career criminal who broke into the veteran's home Dec. 14.

But prosecutors refused to let him off for possessing the unlicensed 9 mm pistol he used to wound Ivan Thompson, 40.

To get the reduced sentence, Dixon, who works a second job on the weekend to support his family, had to acknowledge his wrongdoing, document where he got the gun and prove that he had taken steps to register it.

The conviction will not appear on his record.

Defense lawyer Joseph Mure said Dixon bought the gun from a friend in the mid-1990s after a robber held him up in Florida, where he was serving in the Navy.

He kept the weapon when he moved to Canarsie last year.

"He was a victim . . . The gun was kept inside his home for protection," Mure said outside of court.

Asked what he would change if he could to turn back the clock to that fateful night when he wounded Thompson, Dixon said: "I'd make sure I had a license first."

Thompson, who has a lengthy rap sheet, was wounded in the chest and groin and faces burglary charges.

This is great and all and I am very happy for him in a way but............

COME ON!!!!! The guy gets to go to jail for three days for defending his home, no scratch that, HIS FLESH AND BLOOD FAMILY!!!!!!!!!!!

That is just wrong. Guy should be getter the pucker factor hero of the month award for stepping up to the plate and handling a very stressful situation.

I realize he and the DA are playing ball within the confines of the LAW but this is just stupid.

Thanks for playing our game, thanks for defending your family and let's ask Bob what you've won......"A three day paid vacation at Riker's Island. That's right spend three glorious days relaxing with the scum of the city. Hobnob with petty criminals maybe even do a little networking. All meals and transportation paid for by the city tax payer.":barf:

WHAT A CROCK:barf: :barf:

Once again I am happy the guy didn't get a worse sentence but geeeeezzzz. Mental note, buy a shovel and a few acres of land in the middle of nowhere.

Chris.

He got the shaft with 3 days in Rikers. But I still consider him lucky because this happened in NY where they hate guns in law abiding citizens hands.

It doesn't sound like he did ok to me. Could've been worse is what was meant? Thats even worse. That makes it smell political. I guess they dont want to send the wrong message to the people, that having a gun they don't know about is ok.

(Shovel, Vis-queen, Red-out)

This is the kind of stuff that lends credibility to the conspiricy theorists. My tin foil hat is NOT on too tight.

:barf:

If he gets beaten to death by a bunch of convicts during those 3 days his family should be allowed to line up and shoot out both of the prosecuter's knees and his testicles with a 12 gauge. :cuss:

Is Riker's a rough place?
What if something happens to him in there?
Where is the guy that he shot going? I hope not Riker's??????

The burglar/scumbag lived.

I think this guy should take it as a sign from God that he should move away from NYC, and probably the whole state.

Let's punish somebody, however lightly, for shooting a career criminal that was threatening his family and himself.

Yea... yea, that will fight crime... sure will teach those criminals a lesson! :scrutiny:

Not good ....bad message sent ....he got off easy?....I don't know about that .......Rikers is a hell hole and if he is not in PC he better watch his back.....Politics :fire: :barf:

There's one positive note in this veritable cacophony of anti-Second Amendment bigotry upheld by the force of law:

Thompson, who has a lengthy rap sheet, was wounded in the chest and groin and faces burglary charges.

The actual criminal will probably get more than three days to reconsider the error of his ways.

OH God, I've followed Alice through the looking glass. If that is NY's sense of justice, no wonder they think Schumer is mainstream. I'll stay here in the neanderthal south, never lost anything in NY, so I don't see any need to go there.

While I am glad they did not ream him, I am disheartened that he will see the inside of a place like Rikers at all.

this is why I am an EX NEW YORKER!

RON DIXON will go to rikers
and so will the home invader! and all his buddys will want to have a talk with Mr Dixon! :fire:
THIS IS WHY TERRORIST WILL ATTACK NY CITY AGAIN!!! A BUNCH OF UNARMED SHEEP WAITING FOR SLAUGHTER! :cuss:

its not only wrong for him to be punished for doing the right thing..its MORALLY wrong!he got the shaft if you ask me,he should have been freed immediatly and left alone AND given compensation from a victim fund.:fire:

Observers please note:

When faced with the possibility of a no-bill, unpopular show trial, or setting an unfavorable precedent, all of a sudden the sacred "letter of the law" suddenly exhibits discretion. "Disorderly conduct"??? Look it up in a legal dictionary...Words have lost their meaning.
To get the reduced sentence, Dixon, who works a second job on the weekend to support his family, had to acknowledge his wrongdoing, document where he got the gun and prove that he had taken steps to register it.
So, all is OK if he just "shows remorse" (aka: assume the position)? This story makes no mention of the findings concerning dixon's registration efforts, prior to the incident. Could it be that his application was not acted upon within the statutory time limit?

Furthermore, no mention is made of dixon's future ability to possess firearms...after all this, will he be approved? Will his RKBA be permanently disabled? Important point omitted.

The conviction will not appear on his record.

So, the DA has the ability to erase convictions now? How exactly does that work? Isn't it usually a big secret, bestowed only on the politically connected?

I'm glad the guy can apparently get on with his life. My respect for law drops again...

You can register guns in NYC? I thought you couldn't even have a gun in that hellhole.

Yea......We're not all evil gun grabbers....some of us even know the difference between a revolver and a semi-auto:p
